It's been a while andI probably missed it before, but didn't recall the neogeo cd pads used in the how to?

He showed off the NGCD version of the game and it was the first time we saw footage of that version. J. Mikami didn't seem to know about it, but GameImpact knew exactly what he was doing.

It's not an NGCD version. This is the previously seen AES mode. It's just showing a few options come up after pressing start (as manu AES cartridge games do), plus the video has a limit of 4 credits.

Some people are reading a lot into the use of the NGCD pads in the options menu, but those pads are compatible with all Neo Geo systems (though they were officially marketed as the "Neo Geo CD Controller.") The artist may have just personally preferred to draw it. Also keep in mind that the AES system would have been considered a niche market at this point, while the NGCD would have been a larger focus for the home market at the time, so it would make sense to use that graphic.

I'm trying to remember, isn't there also an official game that also has graphics of the CD pads in the 'how to play' across all versions? I just wouldn't read too much into it.

You beat me to it. We have already seen similar emulated footage a few years ago, including even the end credits.

Looks like someone archived the footage here:
We are so close yet so far to have a ROM of Last Odyssey leaking online :(

The playfields themselves do look very, very basic. I'm not versed enough in pinball to be able to describe the various details, but it looks less fleshed out than Space Cadet Pinball. It has an interesting style, but I would expect the gameplay as shown would get very monotonous very quickly.

Still, like I said, I'd play it, it looks at least like it got to 'functional game' stage. Ghostlop was great, so I won't write something off just because it wasn't released, but I wouldn't be surprised if this one isn't any more than a novelty if it does ever see the light of day.

I collect pinball machines and I'm very intrigued by this game, precisely 'cause it doesn't try hard to replicate the real thing. When you have a couple of short imprecise flippers and floaty ball physics (like most games of this kind) you gotta keep the playfield simple and let the player flail around for a while until he nails a shot. It becomes a hybrid between a real pinball - where sniper-like precision is required, but also possible - and some pachinko machine where you hope to get something by sheer luck. But of course I can't judge the gameplay from a video.
That said, I absolutely love everything about the game's presentation - all the transitions, the special effects, the animated neon-like text, the surprisingly good animation of the chained girl... it's all very old-school and very "japanese", in the best sense. And the game switches backgrounds and objectives often enough to keep you entertained. If I could choose just one proto, it'd surely be this one.

I'd play it. Not going to be an instant classic, but it looks fun. Historical preservation is worth it alone.

We got Ghostlop, which was a great game that was never released.
I'd also give it a shot. While it looks painfully average, at least it would be a different genre for the Neo. There are worse games that were released.
