SNK printed "Advanced Entertainment System" on the ngh shells but the use of the abbreviation AES was neither invented, nor promoted by them. Most people who were there at the time agree that it started in the Usenet days when people like Dion and cronies started using it and then it slowly spread throughout the net.

I am curious why its possible to run a batch of ROTD physical AES releases (quite some MEGS) without problems, but still no reprints of NGDEV titles are available. Shouldn´t be that hard

I consider printing it on the motherboards in 1990 (before any of us were playing Neo Geo) inventing it.

I remember just calling them them home carts when I first joined Dolphinlord/ here. I would imagine also Arcade carts
Didn't there used to be an archive of the DHP mailing list somewhere? I would love to find the first instance of someone using the term AES. I accept part of the blame here, since I did nothing to retain the archives from my message board in the 90's. Shawn has done a great job of keeping our history archived on neo-geo.com.

From my earliest recollection I just said arcade carts and games.

I think I wasn't really active or paying much attention in the scene when the main NGF drama happened, but some of you here talk about it like it's in one of the books of the Neo Geo bible or something.

JPN is the correct Olympic Games tier country abbreviation for

What’s up with people using JAP as an abbreviation anyhow? Ain’t no WW2 vets up in here, lol

Hah, it always seemed way more common among non-native English speaking Westerners like Italians and French.

Never seemed like a racist 'I'm not buying a Honda from those Japs." type thing. More just an odd happenstance of trying to abbreviate something.

I'm a sucker for VGM soundtracks on vinyl, so I may pick up the record. I've got a full set, plus shockbox for my MVS cart from back in the day and can play the game on the bazillion handhelds at the house. I'll pass on the repro.

I was poking around on their website as I got an email that preorders are closing since I signed up for their newsletter when it was first announced. Evidently they make arcade cabinets as well?

What is funny is I've played with a lot of japanese players in various games and even they have used it.Calling someone "the japs" kinda sounds like they are some indie third rate band tbh. Kinda of a low iq slur if you ask me since its just shorthand.

I'm late to the party - didn't see this post originally. Here's the link.

There's loads missing as not all of it was preserved, but it's wild to go back and read posts from your 90's self. I was 16, just got my first Neo in 98, and found this bunch of goobs on AOL.

Thanks! This is great! Now if there was a way to search for the term AES. Looks kind of difficult.

Maybe there's an easier way to just search the whole internet. for the earliest mentions of it.

I love how we're still pretending it costs so much more money to make Neo carts nowadays.
It's a good point. Yeah, it's a niche item and they're dealing in low volume here. However, a repro of something like this where it's just a re-release of an old game can already be ordered cheaply from Aliexpress, and shouldn't cost this much. I have to believe they're just hoping to cash in on the part of the Neo Geo community that's willing to shell out big bucks for games.

The modern releases that have completely new PCB designs to handle more memory, SD card updates and even wifi, now that makes more sense why the cost would be so high.

Even when you pick the cheapest loose bootleg cart from China, it's not cheap. A cart with no game to put on it still costs much more than what the average player would pay for a game.

Nah son, I've seen boots with the tiniest PCBs in them and memory is dirt cheap. Zero difference between a SFC boot and a Neo boot these days except amount of memory. I'm not saying it doesn't cost more than say, a SFC cart - but it sure as hell doesn't cost 1993 retail Neo cart prices which all these releases are asking for. I also understand the numbers are WAY lower, so you gotta' make up costs somewhere. Still Goobenomics though, which is fine. But let's not kid ourselves here.
