It's looking more and more like this is a lazy shit port of a lazy shit translation.

This is either a sale item or someone will have to gift it to me. If I pay top dollar for this remaster, I'm just going to be angry and I really don't have time for it anymore.
I'm not sure what you were expecting. Can you name a really good remaster of a 90's game?

It's good that this exists so that younger generations can play the games, but to me there was never any question that the originals on the Sega CD and Saturn/PS1 are the way to go.

To me the games are very much a product of their time. I'm glad I was a certain young age to enjoy them when they came out, and they were cutting edge then. I'm not sure if I could appreciate them the same now. Cutscenes that seemed a miracle in their time just reused and AI upscaled just doesn't cut it.

I was hoping for...a new translation?

Seemed pretty obvious.

I think you are in the minority for the translation based on what i've seen.
The image enhancements remind me of bad AI upscaling. But this release does make me interested in revisiting the series.

If that's the case, there are a lot of stupid fucking people out there because the WD translation was ass.

Ordered it yesterday morning for PS4. It's barely been a day and amazon is sold out. I guess the demand for it was more there then I realized.

Edit: Sold out on Nintendo Switch but you can still buy it for Xbox One.

WD fans are a notch below people who only watch dubbed anime.
Honestly looking forward to hearing the Japanese audio with subtitles. Will definitely be a nice change of pace after hearing the English VO for so long.

I still remember your really good take on subtitles vs. dubbed. Paraphrasing but, IIRC, "why would the creators of an anime intend for you to hear their work in another language?"

Only downside with this collection, I'm sure they'll just use the same subtitles as the dub. Lazy, if you ask me.

I hope this does well. I admit I would love for Dragon Force to get remastered. Even though I think the 2nd game was so so to me, I loved the 1st one so yeah. Shut up and take my money if that happens.

Edit: Reaching for the stars, I'd love to have Shining Force III get this kind of treatment.

If they did it, they would need to do all 3 scenarios, and the Premium Disk.

Yes, Gungho has said this will not be a limited item so they will just keep making production runs for the time being.

On the good news front, my nephew told me he bought me a copy for the Switch as a kind of comfort food, given that I am coming up on the one year anniversary of my wife's passing and he thought I could use some nostalgic distraction. I told him I was grateful for the gift. It should be here tomorrow.

Nobody knows if the psp versions were koll confirmed!!
I've played them all except this new release, but not back to back so it's hard for me to say. I liked the PSP version just fine, but it seems like I liked the PS1 version more and I don't exactly remember why. I'm replaying the PS1 version right now.

So the reviews are pretty much confirming everyone's fears and suspicions that this is a lazy, or at the very least low skill, port of the PS versions. Blurring at the top and bottom of the screen, quality of life changes that are more confusing than the originla menus and various other incomprehensible changes. And even the already terrible WD localization has been censored to some degree. And apparently there's an all new voice cast for English dub, which I wasn't going to play it with anyway.

Mind you, I haven't tried the game myself yet. Just repeating what the criticisms have been. Even the more positive reviews for the port have their misgivings about this, from what I can see.

I got my wife into the series through the PS1 versions that I still have and she loved them. She ordered the remaster and from what I've seen, I like the widescreen on the town and maps. The voices sound like every current anime dub that you've heard, which is probably fine for new players. The blurry vignette effect around the edges can be turned off. Performance seems fine.

The ai upscaling is horrendous on most character portraits and much of the video. Battle screen backgrounds look poorly zoomed in. Gungho should have hired a competent artist to redraw the backgrounds and clean up the character portraits. I can't imagine that should have been hard since none of that is animated.
