Is it worth starting an Atari Jaguar Collection?

Anyone need a Jaguar? Working console here with the cords and a controller, $500. It's a hot item. PM the prof.

I was going to suggest if you really want a Jaguar, the best way is to grab an $80 console and a Jaguar Game Drive.

My little brother gave me his boxed system, 3DO and Lynx stuff when he got rid of all his game stuff years ago. I thought it was basically worthless, but now it's tempting to cash out and sell that system. Should I share the money with my brother or keep it all? Nah, he didn't want this stuff, and I've dragged it with me through multiple storage units and living situations over the years. This stuff is mine now.

Can't give family a cut? Fuck out of here.
Well, yeah that's why I mentioned it. But keeping stuff adds value. That's why antiques cost more. He's got plenty of money, and I've been storing it for over a decade over several moves.

I'm not selling it now anyway.

I just checked Jaguar system prices on ebay and I am shocked. I had guessed about $80 for a loose gamer condition console with a controller, but no. $500+ ! That's what the Jaguar CD is supposed to cost; not the base console. Amazing!
Oof maybe I should consider selling. I even have the official rgb cable.
Wonder how much that flips for!

My brother got that Jaguar for $50 on clearance at KayBee toys. We went to another game store in the mall afterward, and the guy manning the shop saw the Jaguar in his bag, made an "oof" face and said he hoped we didn't pay much for it.

I made my own Jag RGB cable. Looks like shit but still works. Bought a new original cable for 4 € shipped.

I got a Jaguar RGB cable from retrogamingcables about 5 years ago, and I think I've used about twice.

EGM once gave Tempest 2000 a perfect 10

And I personally know the editor that did that.

Nice guy.

Never got a dime out of Atari for it.

Which meant he actually thought that highly of it.

lol

T2k is great, almost perfect Minter game. Big fan here since the Gridrunner days. Many of the games he made from '82 to now on various systems are among my all-time faves. Good ol' Yak, eh.

Currently I'm playing Tempest 4000 on PS4/5, gonna do a lil' writeup in weekly check about it. Minter did it again, that's fo sho.

Anyway, as much as I like T2k on the Jag, it was made more or less obsolete by the release of Tempest X/X3 on PSX in '96, which has more of everything and an amazing bonus round between levels.... YES, YES, YESSSSS, so cool. It's not just a visual thing, tho, gameplay has also been improved, it's snappier, faster, better, and most importantly more psychedelic, just activate that extra super acid mode or whatever it's called and play the game, like you are on one, love it. :D

T2K with the rotary dial controller is a unique gaming experience. It gets intense, and is tons of fun. It's still good with a d-pad, but the rotary control is the way it was meant to be played.

Edit: that said, while one was supposed to be released to coincide with t2k, atari botched it, and it never came out. Yes, the company that insisted on rushing a cd add-on to a console with an established user base of about 100k, couldn't be assed to put out the controller designed for the game. In one of their in-house IPs no less. Can't make this ineptitude up.

Anyway, for the masochists out there who own a jaguar, there are 3rd party and modified rotary controllers available now. If you already own a jaguar, it's a waste not to pick one of these up for tempest because it at least gives you a gaming experience you can't get anywhere else.

Eye of the beholder and all that. It's certainly a jewel in the haystack of chud that is the jag library.

I was just gonna say, there can't be just Raiden, AvP, T2k and Rayman that are good on Jag, or can it?

I remember Playing pitfall and cannon fodder a lot.
I remember getting the snes or genesis version of Pitfaal and being suprised how awfull it looked compared to the Jag.
I enjoyed Iron Soldier this was in 1998. Dino Dudes was also fun but once again just some atari ST port I assume.
Nothing that sets your pant on fire

You mean Pitfall the Mayan Adventure? I didn't like it on Genny but the visuals were my least problem, the game was just boring for me.

Cannon Fodder I tried hard to like but it's just too slow. With the exception of Herzog Zwei and a few others, I also never was a big real-time fan.

I've seen vids of Iron Soldier, looks quite good, gotta check it out on emu.

Pitfall seems like a better idea on a system with a lackluster library like the Jaguar or the 32x. If you're playing on a Genesis with its extensive library it's more like "lol why would we play this garbage?"

There were only like 50-60 games that ever even came out for it, tak. It was only around for a couple of years. Other than what's been mentioned, I'd add the driving games Power Drive Rally and Super Burnout, both pretty good. Great ports of Doom and Wolfenstein, and NBA Jam is a unique port compared to the other consoles of the era. Ultra Vortek is a decent Mortal Kombat clone, and much better than the infamously goofy Kasumi Ninja. Hm, Val D'Isere Skiing and Snowboarding is solid. The soccer games, Sensible and Fever Pitch are both pretty good. Atari Karts is a decent kart racer. Um, Brutal sports football. I'm running out here. Haha. Idk, man. Its reputation is pretty accurate.

That said, there are probably another 20 or so games that are unique to the jaguar that a lot of the hardcore jag fans like. Lots of 3d shooter type games and whatnot. It's a ymmv taste type of thing. And then some ports of games that were available on everything else during that era. A gamedrive romcart or rick whitehouse's emulator are the best ways to play nowadays since everything is so stupid expensive.

Heh, yeah, it was that but I also didn't like the fact they tried to cash in on a big name coz Mayan Adventure had not a lot in common with the original game that we all played and loved.

There was something with the 32X version, don't remember exactly but it was considered worse than the Genny game.

32x game is only 30fps like the snes game. The genesis and scd were both 60fps. There are some reasons that the scd port was considered the best, maybe an additional stage or something, I don't know the details off hand. I recall a guy named Barone did a massive wall of text comparison breakdown of all the ports on a few of the forums back in the day.
