Definitely for that sub population that wants the retro look and feel of GBC.
It's no different than people who play OG gameboy on that blurry mess of a screen. There's no amount of mods that will convince me to play on an original GB screen.

Basically aimed at the pokemon crowd. It's even calling the preorders 1st editions. I'd be lying to say im not interested. But not at it's asking price. $250 for the handheld, tetris, and it's matching headphones. It looks like they're also publishing their own game cartridges.

I don't know why, but the line 'heirloom quality' left me a little triggered. I hate the pretentious BS inherent in that statement. That and the magnesium alloy shell had my eyes rolling so hard, that they almost popped out of my head.

An attempt to match the original screen's pixel count and size is the only part of this thing that interests me.

Looks fine for what it is. Personally I don't care enough about Game Boy to buy another device. I just modded an old Super Game Boy to have the correct clock speed using qwertymodo's board (which was cheap and really easy), and that's plenty for me.

The Wave color is pretty sexy, but if I were to buy a portable to travel with, which is really my only use case where the Steam Deck or Switch wouldn't work, I'd want something digital so if I lost it the games don't go with it.

Did anyone get a Chromatic GB? I read a lot of good things about it and happened to find one in a Gamestop, so I picked it up (got a 10% off with some random post-Xmas promo). Overall I am impressed, the screen is great, build quality is solid with a nice weight to it. Just got a ED GB and rediscovering my youth. I can't believe so many cool translated roms are out there, good times will be had.

Oh shit, it's heirloom quality! So when you prematurely drop dead and your family is cleaning out your storage unit hoardings, at least they will have this timeless artifact to pass on to future generations!
Seems like a great way of getting buried in an unmarked grave out of spite by the family. Land and properties? A car? Savings and life insurance? No Billy grandpa left us $10000 in credit card bills, an old Nintendo thingy and a rental place needing a serious deep cleaning operation

A buddy of mine pick one up and really likes it also. He said the same- build quality is really nice and screen looks great. It is tempting but I just picked up an Analogue Pocket when they released their latest batch.

Jesus, the prices on the Chromatic games that look like $4.99 indie garbage bin titles on Steam are insane. They definitely should have gone for the Evercade multi-game cart route if they are charging this much.

If you're spending $200 probably best to go with an Analogue Pocket simply for flexibility with the Open FPGA project unless you're simply interested in any new piece of retro hardware and are curious from a hardware perspective. I don't foresee this device having very long legs...

For playing GameBoy games, everything about this is reportedly better than the Analogue Pocket, so it depends what your intended purpose is.

I for one would never give Analogue money because of their business model, just like I will never give Limited Run Games money.

Also this thing seems completely retarded with the Funnyplaying FPGBC being available for under 100 bucks

I think the Chromatic's screen and build quality is the biggest differentiator (to justify the price). I have the AP, and I don't like playing GB/GBC games on it. Tempted to get a FPGBC just to compare though. But I understand for most people, spending $200 for the Chromatic is a non-starter.

I'd have entertained the idea at $80-100, maybe $120. But at $200 it's a niche within a niche. Anyone willing to spend $200 on a modernized GBC with no frills would also likely be in the market for the Analogue Pocket.
