Saying a ps5 is a gaming pc is like saying a GameCube was a Mac. Just because they use the same hardware - it's not a pc. Unified memory, extra arm based media chips, custom BSD.. so yeah about as much of a pc as a GameCube is a Mac then

They might as well start selling desktop PCs at a console price. That's almost what it is now. Throw Windows on it. Then it could play Steam and everything else on Windows + XBOX games.

Would be as easy as allowing options to boot to Windows, or a similar boot-up designed by Microsoft that is like Steam Big Picture. That way if you want it to be in console mode you don't need a wireless mouse and keyboard by your couch. If you want to use it as a PC, leave it in Windows mode with a Mouse + Keyboard.

Make it extremely easy to change out the CPU, RAM, and GPU for those who are scared of a PC. That way they don't have to design new hardware every 4 years, and players can save money by simply upgrading 1 part at a time.

They are Microsoft. It's like they are actively trying to lose the console war.

Consoles are sold at a loss because you're buying into Sony, Nintendo or MS's environment where you pay subscription fees and they get a cut of the game license fees. If PC's cost the same consoles would lose a major selling point.

I shouldn't have even mentioned Nintendo. They are weird and so are their diehard fans. There are probably sub $100 mini PC's that are faster than a Switch (and probably the Switch 2 soon), but you wouldn't have the portable form factor. You can get more power for less cost from the Steam Decks and the imitators of course.

I understand that, but Microsoft owns Windows. They could throw Windows on there without having to pay to develop a new OS everytime a console is released. It would all be integrated in Windows on the console. As long as Windows still runs x86 all future games developed for PC would be supported.

It seems pointless for a company with the largest and best gaming platform in the world to not use the software they have been developing for the last 30+ years. No other company could match their price and have such flexibility, because they would have to factor in licensing Windows on each console. They are basically splitting their player base between Windows and XBox. They could still make money selling components to upgrade that only work in Xbox consoles.

To me it would make sense to buy a PC with a disc drive and be able to game on Windows and play XBOX discs. Or have the flexibility to build a PC from scratch and throw a Xbox disc in it. Whatever they are doing now isn't working out. Any other company other than Microsoft probably would have went under by now.

It would basically be like a reverse switch. Instead of console/handheld hybrid, it would be a desktop/console hybrid that ran Windows.

Yeah please never start a business

You really don't think people wouldn't buy a Windows based console that can play every game created through the entire history of 64-bit Windows + Xbox games?

They already don't develop a new OS every time they release a console. Series X is running the same OS as Xbox One, and it works pretty decently too. It has Microsoft Edge too.

Having Windows on there sounds terrible. I remember the Android-based Ouya, but what was the even older console that played PC games? Google can't seem to remember it either. If the rumors are true and Valve goes ahead with releasing a Steam-based console (basically a non-portable Steam Deck) I think that has a chance of succeeding (and hurting Microsoft) due to their huge existing user base.

It wasn't really a console, but there were Steam Machines that released with a wet fart and were pretty much ignored. Neat idea, but it was more of a spec sheet than a real product, and the machines themselves were mostly overpriced and underpowered. Valve 2025 is in a much better position to revisit the idea though, likely making the hardware themselves to actually be price competitive like the Deck since they know they'll make it back in software anyway.

I don't know if I've told this story here but my friend gave me an Xbox One about six months ago.

He is part of a facebook group with his neighborhood and one day he saw a post pop from a neighbor that basically said 'free Xbox One to the first person. Comes with games and controllers.'

My pal jumped on it and ran right over and got it. The older woman was happy to give it away.

We suspect she was mad at someone in her family for some reason and this was revenge.

My buddy never even plugged it in. He just didn't care. He is primarily a Nintendo guy but he has fond memories of the 360 so that was what got him to go in on it.

But eventually we talked about it and he was like 'I don't need this, do you want it?'

So now it's mine.

It remains in the box, unconnected. Never even turned it on or anything.

Is the Xbox One BC to OG Xbox?

I bought an Alienware version of a Steam Machine in 2016 or so. It fucking sucked. Out of the box it took about 8 minutes to go from pressing the power button to Big Picture launching. Early to late 2000s game ran fine but everything else ran like shit. I was so frustrated with it that I haven't tried to get back into PCs since.
