I'd already heard the all-but-confirmed rumors this was happening. Supposedly the next new Forza and Gears of War games will release simultaneously on both consoles. Not much left to Xbox as a console platform anymore. I used to be happy to get the occasional new Halo, Gears or Forza.

what is a console anymore? It's just a set top PC.
I know cloud gaming has repeatedly failed, but it wont fail forever and M$ knows this. and M$ has azure. Sony has nothing.

It's strange that Sony never put any stake in enterprise tech. So many companies - hitachi to IBM - have completely abandoned consumer tech, but Sony's all or nothing.

Agreed - A "console" for the last two generations has been, more or less, an unupgradable, closed-system PC.

That said, Sony does have quite a robust cloud service that has been active for years that's included with the top tier PS Plus subscriptions or stand-alone. I've heard it works well so long as you have a decent connection, but I haven't daily used a modern console in years so I've never tested it myself.

Meanwhile, Linux gaming slowly but surely continues to encroach on Windows. So when everyone wakes up and realizes your first point, Microsoft may not be in as great of shape, especially when both Forza Horizon and Horizon: Zero Dawn games are both on PC. Also, God bless Proton.

Nah, no way it will "not fail" if its trying to kill local gaming, lol.

I will not be upgrading my PS5, it's over for consoles IMO. Who gives a shit about the visual fidelity gains new nvidia cards are getting, you can't base another generation of consoles on that crap and expect people to flock to it like the PS2 launch day. Meanwhile, Valve has been doing a bang up job in consolidating Linux for gaming and I feel like the only missing piece in this puzzle is a way to run Linux games without having to dual boot OSes for gaming. A windows subsystem for Steam OS with no performance penalty is all we need.

Are we assuming that Forza Horizon 5 will sell well on PS5 then (and probably Switch 2)? It's a beautiful, well-made game, but a bit old at this point. If they go through with releasing their next new games simultaneously on the other consoles, no doubt they stand to make a lot or money, which is why they're doing this. Microsoft is the biggest game publisher in the world at the moment.

It's cool in a "no grown adult gives a fuck about exclusives anyway" kinda way and I'm sure they're raking it in selling Call of Duty skins or whatever but they really are just making their own hardware even more irrelevant.

I could be wrong but I’m assuming that’s only because they bought Minecraft.

We probably wouldn't be here if their hardware was selling better. It's a shame because Series X is a well-designed console overall.

Phil Spencer has indicated putting focus on multiplats, and that the next Xbox will need to differentiate itself as the best hardware available.

Which it won't
Like the last 20+ years
Eh, I think Xbox was the best hardware in that it was the most powerful and easy to develop for. Similar for 360. It wasn't the most powerful, but the PS3 was so hard to develop for that most games looked a lot better on 360. The past few gens, PS and XB have been practically the same. Sony has to have Cerny give talking heads about some minutia about VRAM bandwidth and memory management and present that as this game changer that beats out Xbox having a 4% higher spec on CPU and GPU.

Xbox One was the only major stumble in terms of the power differential wtih Sony.

Their modern SDK is so fat it performs worse
The xbone was completely crippled
Comparing 360 performance to what they got out of cell in later years , just fucking lol

Yup. This. I didn't bother to get into it here, but you're absolutely right. The Series X achieves performance generally on par with PS5 despite better specs on paper (PS5 does have the whole 'overclocking' thing but I doubt that's a real factor in practice).

I think MS is paying a performance cost for the portability and flexibility of their platform. I can't stay mad at Series X for this since it's achieving the same performance at the same price, and the console's physical form factor is far better.

This is actually a good conversation. I'm enjoying it.
