Real answer is Fatal Fury 1…
If you forget about the rest of the library, FF1 is legit a great Neo Geo game. It exudes that sort of platform energy. The further the games get from 1990 the more it becomes about attempting to transcend the platform itself.

FF1 is the fan that created the Earth's entire supply of stable air.

Whoever voted 94 and/or 96, must have their balls chopped off.

and shoved down their orifices. '94 still holds up, and not just for nostalgia. It has that particular crossover party atmosphere that mostly left the series afterwards, one of the best (if not the best) soundtracks, fantastic backgrounds and presentation, and a terrific finale VS the best/most emblematic villain of the series... It's one of the best episodes!
I thought it was common thinking to consider 2k1 as the weakest one.

94 was ground breaking. Thinking that 96 isn't a bottom tier KOF in most aspects is about as stupid as believing flat Earth theory.

94 still holds up great even if 95 basically did it better but I will say the soundtrack in 94 is one of the best.

2K1 may be ugly as fuck, but it has a very good gameplay and the Ratio system is the best in the striker KOF series.

2K3 really takes the crown that nobody wants. absolutely rubish. Thankfully KOF XI corrected that absolute nasty abomination.

I'd take 2k1 over 2k3 any day
Only one I don't own on homecart because I'm not paying a grand for that trash

2K1, easy decision for me.

It looked awful and sounded awful. I remember playing it for the first time and being absolutely gobsmacked at how bad the presentation was. The shitty character portraits, the drab and lifeless backgrounds, the weirdly designed UI, the super shitty music that felt like cut songs from a bad 1989 R&B album...even the character voices sounded much scratchier and poorer quality.

All that said, the roster was still great, the gameplay was very solid and fun, the intro was neat, and the two final bosses were badass.

So, even though it's the worst, it's still a fun game even if it often makes my eyes and ears bleed.

2003 hands down.
Such a letdown after 2002.
Felt like an absolute downgrade in every aspect.
2002 played very well but the graphics were mid.
But 2003 even the sound effect when you hit someone was terrible.

You've gotta look at the big picture. After 2000 people thought SNK couldn't do it on their own. But not only did they come back, they reinvented the whole game system and engine in 2003. Maybe it wasn't as good, but they changed it and modernized it. Then they perfected that in XI. It was quite a comeback story.

After 98 I didn't spend a lot of time on KOF, at least not as much as I did 94-98 because the NESTS storyline didnt really grab my attention like the Orochi so I cant really comment on 99-03. I played them, just not as much as the previous ones.

Up to 98, I guess I'd have to say 95 is "the worst" but even then it doesn't feel right saying that because 95 is awesome.

K' was somehow the least gay of the three KOF protagonists, a neat trick considering his costume design. Also a ton of fun to play.
