Been eyeing a copy of this game for xbox since it got added to backwards compatibility, but is it actually any good? Or is it another low-budget, low-effort feeling playmore game like SVC is?

It's an SNK game right?
It's automatically da bestest evah and beats 103% of all other games in every single aspect.
Honestly though, it's a slightly above average KoF game.
I believe you can play the arcade rom on Dreamcast if you have a gdemu installed as it is an Atomoswave game.

More or less a tweaked version of KOF 2K2 Playmore used as a testbed of ideas for the switch to the Atomiswave. I really enjoyed it upon released, more polished than 2K2 presentation wise. Decent soundtrack too - maybe a bit overly jazzy? I haven't played it in years, though.

On its own it's alright, but I'd rather play nearly any other KOF game. If you're playing this on original Xbox, you're better off with the 2002/2003 two pack, both games are better.

Been playing it like crazy when I was new, excellent game, highly recommended if you like technical fighters and tinkering with team setups. Tight engine. Bought the PS2 version and still have it.

It was their first Atomiswave game and seemed more like a tech demo then a proper KOF entry. The presentation is ugly, the music is very meh, no story, roster is kind of boring, the gameplay is fine but nothing to write home about, and the final boss of Young Geese takes SNK boss syndrome to new ridiculous levels.

I guess you can enjoy it as a novelty, but not worth tracking down. You're better off playing KOF XI, or even better, Neo-Geo Battle Coliseum.

It's not a bad game but it's more of a tech demo than a game. It's kinda of a janky version of KoF 2002 with some mild tweaks and multiple "modes": one is like traditional KoF "Advanced" mode (3 stocks), one is like traditional KoF "Extra" mode with one stock and level 3s can only be done with low health and the third has two stocks and you can do Just Defends and an unblockable knockdown that costs one bar.

They removed most of the Eolith characters from it (and added back a few fan favorites), added Young Geese as a boss and plopped it out. It's not bad by any stretch but 2002 plays better and I was never a fan of its UI or soundtrack.

Here's a NW thread from the past, you can tell that it wasn't love at first sight for me but it grew on me, and then some.

I don't think it's pointless.
I see it as a quirky alternative that's fun to play on occasion like the Maximum Impact series.
