Can't think of the first two games without thinking of those fucking shitty movies.

Fuck, I knew they wouldn't put gorey Fatalities in those moves. I keep telling my friends they would be neutered PG-13 bullshit. They didn't listen...

"MMOOORRRRRTAAALL KOMMMBAT!"

In the MK2 video game, Reptile was the best Ninja.

Me and my big bro used to rent this game all the time. My little brother was scared of the trees in that living forest stage. Later on when he was lik 8 he wanted to face his fears, so I went to rent MK2 for him but they didnt have it, so I got Mk3 instead, that game gave him even more nightmares. My mom punished me for that lol.

We used to have those Consumer Electronics stores back in the day, and I remember looking at the catalog every day when MK2 was advertised for SNES. My buddy got the game, so instead, I went and got a job at a flea market setting up tables that summer and got the SNES arcade stick so that we could practice for our trips to the arcade.
We also did this quite a bit for 'training' when MK3 was coming out; we registered at a Micro Play tournament where the grand prize was a PS1 (right at launch when they were really expensive). My buddy lost in the first round, and I got beat in the third by a guy with cerebral palsy; man could that dude talk trash.

Might just be me, but I found MKII on the SNES a hard completion to make...?

Kintaro was fucking unreal, unless you Sub-Zero'd his arse or Kitana Fanned his tits off...

Kintaro and Shao Kahn were actually pretty easy in the game but you had to find their weakness and exploit it like a motherfucker. It's been a while, but I think with Kintaro it was mostly using jump kicks with correct timing, and with Shao Kahn you basically ducked and blocked into the corner taking the abuse until he taunted or otherwise gave you an opening to punish.

Mileena and Kitana though, fuck. They were impossible. You do anything and the psychic CPU hits you with a fan or sai.

You can beat Kintaro in a corner trap with any character using properly timed punches. It's a recovery frame glitch. Yes, I've played too much MKII. You can beat him legit with any character as well. Just takes practice, same for Kahn without using the corner trick.

You're still trying to win?

The Saturn version of MKII was horrible. Sounds and animations were removed left and right. Still confused to this day how the SNES Version came out better than the Saturn version.

I blame Probe. They made an awesome 32x port, but couldn't cut the mustard on the Saturn.

Yeah, wtf was up with that? I picked up the Saturn version thinking it would be arcade perfect, and it was an abomination. I later got the 32x one, and while not arcade perfect either, is a very enjoyable version and probably the best we got until the emulation compilations later.

What was wrong with the Saturn port?

My main gripe is the sound effects. Many of them were cut out, causing the game to play quieter. The music was also redone, sounds worse than the arcade. You'd also figure that Shao-Khan could morph without load-times, not the case on the Saturn. I'm sure there's more, but I haven't played Saturn MK2 in a long while.

IIRC it would stop to load for a second mid match, like it had to load special moves or something. Terrible.

I have to sit down and watch the original again one of these days, I remember it being at least better than the Street Fighter movie.

I actually picked up the MK2 board a few weeks back, looking forward to playing it for the first time in ages. I had the SNES release back in the day and it is the only MK i ever liked.

Scorpion in that thumbnail pic looks cooler than any iteration I've seen him in (since mk2).

Ed Boon needs to sit his ass in front of a TV/VCR and watch Big Trouble in Little China all over again....he needs to be reminded of what made Mortal Kombat so compelling in the first place.

Throw in a bunch of Early Bruce Lee/JCVD flick in there as well while he's at it.

The best of the early ports imo. These days we can play it perfectly on the MK arcade collection.

Yeah...unless you want to relive it for nostalgia reasons, there is zero reason to play the SNES, Gen or 32X versions of MKII now. There's better elsewhere...

Damn straight. Game Gear 4 lyfe.

I have poured more hours into that version than any man should have. Being fair, for awhile it was the only version I owned or had access to. Now, I still rock that one every once in awhile for a nostalgia kick, but on my Master System instead. I can still remember and pull off all the finishers in that one, even the ones where the inputs were changed from the original.

+1 on the love for the 32X version. For the longest time the only 32X games I had were MKII and Knuckles' Chaotix. Both great games in my book, and the upgrade from the Genesis version of MKII was obvious even to nine year old famicommander.
