I'm tossing in Football Frenzy among all these Football/Soccer games so that Pleasure Goal has some competition.

Honestly, I'm still a bit amazed the Neo Geo got a whopping 9 football games, if excluding Football Frenzy. But... Then, given Neo Geo Cup 98 is a shameless reissue or Super Sidekicks 3, maybe it's really just 8 footie games.

The ironically titled Pleasure Goal is the worst.

Pleasure Goal sounds like the title to a bad (great?) porno.

Either Tecmo World Cup or Goal! Goal! Goal!

Futsal ain't great, but definitely not the worst footy game on the Neo.

Is it Tecmo World Cup ‘96 or Goal x3 where all the players move together in a formation? Whichever one that’s the worst.

The Super Sidekicks series is the gold standard for footie games as far as I’m concerned.

For neo, probably. For arcade football games... personally it would be either Taito's Football Champ (aka Hat Trick Hero), or Sega's original Virtua Striker. I don't think any of the SSKs have aged terribly well.

Super Sidekicks 2 is terrible but it was the groundwork for the awesome Super Sidekicks 3 and Neo Geo Cup 98. 1 is a different beast altogether but still fun.

Honestly, arcade soccer games pale in comparison to Konami's home system output (ISS, Winning Eleven) anyway, so trying to find the best one today is kind of a moot point.

Tecmo and Goalx3 both were underwhelming from what I recall... Been a long time since I've played most of these.

I recall actually liking Pleasuregoal - felt like straightforward fun and worth throwing in the cab. I would own that game again.

Futsal/Pleasure Goal isn't as bad as it may seem at the first glance. The gliding-on-ice thing is the biggest hurdle for beginners, once you get that down (tip: more passing, less dribbling) it's actually a quite nice and interesting game, one that probably does not have the lastability of other footie games but there defo is more to it than it seems. I own the CD version, btw.

Other than that, there isn't really a footie stinker among the Neo "soccer" games. Don't hate on Soccer Brawl, love the game, it's Neo SNK through and through, totally in-yer-face. The CPU AI sucks, tho, while the game really shines in 2P so please don't make the mistake to judge it by its 1P mode.

Best soundtrack... Jun Senoue ftw.
Fuck that takes me back.

I had ex rental copy from Blockbuster. It was scratched and partly borked.

If I didn’t skip the intro video just before the epic end of that chord at 0.34 in 02 Chase the Wind (lol, farts) it would crash. I think today might be the first time I’ve heard that song in full.

Thanks for sharing, and for listening to my Ted talk on the risks of buying ex rental games in the late 90s.

Blame the Brits...

I genuinely enjoy Soccer Brawl. Really the only soccer/football game that I ever play on the system anymore, probably due to its unique nature. It's classic arcade fun, full of personality, and great to play with a buddy.

As far as the more traditional playing soccer games on Neo, even the good ones like Sidekicks are bettered by so many competitor games on rival machines. So whenever I do play one, I find myself longing for a better game after a bit. Which is a shame, and almost baffling, considering how many soccer games are on the Neo.

one would not be baffled as this applies to half the geo's library

He must have been imagining the "footballers" breaking wind while he was writing it. I think I had a used, possibly ex-rental, as well, and luckily it played fine. I transferred the music to a cassette so we could listen to it with the other game stuff in the car.

Football Frenzy isn't actually that bad of a game if the characters moved maybe at 2.5x speed.
