My wife asked if civil forfeiture really happens in America and I was like yeah in some cases. IMO it is truly one of the most bizarre things about America.

What context did they come up in? But yeah, civil forfeiture is insane. Don’t bump the thread lol.

A Girl goes to a far off town and makes a deal with the god of poverty to go to the afterlife to save her family member, in doing so releases demons upon the unsuspecting world it’s Beetlejuice 2 … no I mean Ghost Cat Anzu

Kind of Beetlejuice 2 and Spirited Away from makers of new Shin Chan and Doremon (It kind of looks like the new Shin Chan games).

It came up on my YouTube suggestions and is a limited theater release (tomorrow looks like the last day).

Kind of a slow burn in the beginning but fans of anime should enjoy. Starts out like the lazy days of Japanese Summer with a anthropomorphic cat.

I got that trailer for all the anime Fathom events I've been to, forgot it was already showing.

Mortal Kombat (1995)- I always forget this is directed by Paul WS Anderson.

The Mario Bros. movie is so weird it's at least kind of interesting and the Street Fighter movie is so bad it's actually fun but this is just bad bad. I remember going to the theater and trying to convince myself that it was okay but I knew deep down it was a turd. The hype was huge though, I had friends that were playing the soundtrack, it had the Highlander in it and the trailers looked good. But even at 12 I knew.

I will say the sets and locations are pretty cool it's too bad they're wasted. The CG is just as bad and out of place as I remember. One thing I'd forgotten is how bad the actual fights are, the one thing that should be at least moderately entertaining. The acting is bad but at least most of the cast seem to be trying their best despite the material. Christopher Lambert is just horribly miscast though and he sticks out like a sore thumb.

I know it's MK and it's always been goofy bullshit but considering that the games are literally just a hodge-podge of 80's action and martial arts movies you'd think this would be a bit more self aware. I understand why some people like this, the games and the movie are basically a 12 year old boy who grew up on Van Damme, Cannon, Bruce Lee etc. fantasy brought to life in 90's glory. Just don't let your nostalgia try to convince me it's an enjoyable movie.

Terrifier: The Short

Art's first appearance and 20 minutes of his shenanigans. Even with a low budget it's a bloodfest.

If you don't like the films, this short won't change your mind but I enjoyed it.

Lifeforce: This must have been one of those movies where they relied on kids telling each other how there's tons of boobs (and a solid 10 seconds of vulv) in order to sell tickets.

What's not to like about a naked hot chick that's a space vampire?

Runaway Train- Old school Cannon action thriller starring Jon Voight, Eric Roberts and Rebecca DeMornay. This is the kind of movie I used to watch with my dad on the weekends growing up. A great sense of tension with brutal atmosphere that really gives the movie a visceral feel. It's a very tight, focused and lean movie. The performances are all solid if not a little camp, it is a Cannon movie after all. Same goes for some of the optical effects, they get the job done but don't quite match up to a major studio. Still quite impressive all things considered. Also lots of appearances by well known character actors including Danny Trejo, Tiny Lister and Nauls from The Thing.

This one has held up pretty well and I really enjoyed revisiting it. It's the kind of movie that just doesn't get made anymore, a real guy movie that's lean, mean and well made.

Gladiator II
Remember Gladiator I? Congrats, you now know what happens in Gladiator II, except there are two emperors and a pet monkey.
There are certain Acts that feel like they were guest directed by George Lucas. You'd swear you are watching a Star Wars scene based in Rome.

Two thoughts:
Holy hell there's a Gladiator 2.
Holy shnikes Ridley Scott is turning 87 in a week and still making movies.

Yeah, Gladiator 2 is a head scratcher. I actually had no idea it was directed by Scott. From the trailers I assumed it was some random studio hack, all the clips I saw were big dumb spectacle. Like someone imitating the original and turning all the goofiest parts up to 11.

I wouldn't be surprised if Scott had to make it in exchange for Napoleon.

MaXXXine- It was alright, I'd say on par with X but nowhere near as good as Pearl. Which I suspect will be a career high for West that he'll never be able to top. It looked great for the most part, it really captured the scummy side of 80's Hollywood. It was paced well, had a great soundtrack and score. Mia Goth was excellent, the rest of the cast was a mixed bag though. The biggest problem with this is that it's a very uneven movie, you can kind of feel it hitting the mark and then missing from scene to scene. It's also just a little too comfortable being an homage fest. We get De Palma, Argento, Tarantino, Polanski and even some Boogie Nights. If you're going to be so cavalier with stealing from your inspirations you have to back it up with something. Tarantino can pull it off, West not so much. You also don't really feel the character arc like the movie wants you to, which kind of deflates everything. Still it's fun enough, just not quite the movie that it thinks it is.

Damn I was hoping this one would be alright. I wonder how much Denzel got paid.

The Martian was an above average production of that story. No one would mistake it for Alien or Blade Runner but it was a totally serviceable "saving Matt Damon" movie.

Denzel was amazing. This was definitely outside of his normal characters, and it was refreshing to see him play something else.

Above average? Yes. But as your own mild compliment for the film implies, it's well below his high water mark. As most of his films have been for over two decades. His last potential stab at greatness was Kingdom of Heaven, a movie I once greatly respected but now see as an utter failure on every meaningful level.

I'd say The Last Duel was another shot for him to make a true classic but it seems these days, the only thing Scott is good at is showing you where the money was spent on screen via production values.

Movies are stories. Therefore, Scott needs to be a storyteller first and foremost. But nowadays, that's the least of his concerns.

Trancers- Classic Empire/Full Moon direct to video sci-fi action shlock starring Tim Thomerson and Helen Hunt. Basically it's Charles Band's Blade Runner which in true Band fashion managed to spawn 5 sequels. Not quite up to Puppet Master levels but still respectable lol. I've actually never seen any of these before but I have to say this first one is pretty enjoyable and I'll probably check out the others.

Say what you will about Band and Full Moon but at least his movies always know exactly what they are and this one is all the better for it. Thomerson is great as Jack Deth, a time traveling bounty hunter sent back to 1985 Los Angeles from 2247 to catch a psychic serial killer who turns people into the titular Trancers. Basically zombie assassins. It's cheap, it's fun and it doesn't overstay it's welcome. Highly entertaining junk.

I don't think those movies would work at all with anyone other than Thomerson. He's like a cousin once removed from Bruce Campbell.

Appointment With Death- The 3rd Peter Ustinov Poirot movie, he did 3 theatrical ones and 3 or 4 made for TV movies. Oddly enough this one is a Cannon production and a pretty good one at that. It's still a definite step down from Evil Under The Sun and Death On The Nile but for a Cannon movie it has surprisingly good production value. With some great locations and a solid cast including Lauren Bacall, Carrie Fisher, Hakley Mills, Piper Laurie and John Guilgud. It's a typical Poirot murder mystery that follows the usual formula, a bit sloppier and more camp than than others but still manages to check all the boxes. Not great but not bad, worth a watch if you're an old school Poirot fan.
