Neo Geo games you just don't rate

So, off of the back of Sage's thread on SvC, I think most of can agree that it is a flawed game that is not particularly well rated amongst Neo Geo fans, but there are a few people who like it for what it is.

But what about the flip side? Focusing mainly on the OG SNK era, what games were released that seem to be popular by general consensus that you don't rate for whatever reason?

Personally, I've never like the World Heroes series, Perfect is ok, but is far from perfect.

I don't like Magician Lord, I find it boring and rather frustrating.

I don't understand why people like Top Hunter - sure the graphics are nice, but the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired, especially compared with similar games of the era.

Flying Power Disc - it's fun for a few minutes, but this game had / has a huge following, and I've never understood what the fuss was about.

What would your picks be?

Flying Power Disc/Windjammers is one of those games you need to play with a friend to truly enjoy IMO. Single player gets old in a hurry.

NAM-1975. No idea why people love it so much. I've played it a few times and nothing about it has struck me as special or worth owning.

Same with Pulstar. Not like teh Neo was brimming with shooties, but again, played it a few times and nothing really stood out to me as to why people spaz out for it. I'd rather play a Sonic Wings, and for whatever reason Pulstar is way expensive compared to either SW game.

Both NAM and Pulstar are fine. I wouldn't put them anywhere close to the "awful" category like TPG or Riding Hero. Maybe I just don't get them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Galaxy Fight - it has a good soundtrack, but for the price I'd rather buy Waku Waku 7 if I want to play something from Sunsoft
Kabuki Klash - it has a very specific atmosphere/setting, but I don't enjoy that kind of setting very much and consider the gameplay average

I hate a lot of the older games. Things like Alpha Mission 2, Ghost Pilots, Ninja Combat, Sengoku, etc. They get rated higher specifically for being on Neo, but they are pretty shit. Some will say that the jank is part of that early 90's arcade charm, But Capcom, Konami, and others had better stuff in the same genres years earlier.

Let's take Sengoku for example. It has some cool art direction and ideas, but the actual gameplay is meh and the hit detection in particular is abysmal for a beatemup. Considering we had been playing Final Fight for almost 2 years at that point, it sucks.

I'll have to disagree with the Master of Meat though, Nam rules. The last boss is bullshit, but it still rules.

This is one of the things that gets me with the wider perception of the Neo Geo as a console - that is was this amazing format for shmups.

Is. It. Bollocks.

Let's see:

Andro Dunos is an average Gradius rip-off at best - and, ironically, another game I can't understand why some people get all moist and horny for.

ASO II - has a very small legion of appreciation, but otherwise is firmly kicked into touch by a huge number of other verts from the same period.

Sonic Wings games - fun in short periods, but hardly the genres finest hour unless you factor in the number of shmups that let you play as a dolphin, then, yeah, sure, it's A-No.1.

Viewpoint - an isometric shmup best known for that and its brutal difficulty / learning curve.

Pulstar - very good R-Type clone, again known for being brutally difficult, and it's pre-rendered graphics.

Ironclad - meh, grossly overrated.

Blazing Star - arguably the Neo's best all-round shump, but not enough to make the system a go-too for shmups.

Last Resort - Good R-Type-esque shmup, but lets face it, there are better horis out there.

Prehistoric Isle 2 - average hori, fun it short blasts, generally no one ever talks about it.

Twinkle Star Sprites - novelty shmup puzzler, innovative for the time, a lot of fun, but, again, not worth buying the system for.

Captain Tomaday - yeah, lol.

Have I missed anything? Maybe, but yeah, compare that lot to what's on PC-Engine and Mega Drive, and later the Saturn. Sorry, the Neo may well be legendary, but as a shmups platform? What the fuck are you huffing?

100% agree. If we're talking purely about shooties I'll take the Mega Drive or Saturn over teh Neo any day. No contest.

PS: I love that fuckin' Dolphin though. :keke:

Windjammers died a death in our arcade, never understood why that game is so popular because it wasn't for decades

Yep, it's not a system for shmups

You missed Ghost Pilots (no big loss) and Zed Blade and Strikers 1945 Plus, both of which I rather like, but no doubt the Neo still can't compete with many other console libraries in terms of shmups. Half a dozen good games just can't begin to stand up to the PC Engine, Mega Drive, Saturn, PS1, or PS2 libraries.

Hummm - my list is rather contentious as many of the games I "dont rate" are overall well-liked by fans both new and old.
  • Samurai Shodown 4 - The dial-a-combo bull just doesn't fit a SS game. I'm a staunch fan of 3, though, which is also uncommon. 🤷‍♂️
  • Pulstar - I've tried for years to like this game, but I just can't get into it.
  • Matrimelee - I don't like any of the Noise Factory games, really.
  • KOF 97 - I never looked back to 97 once 98 came out. It's literally 97 perfected in terms of gameplay and mechanics...and it has a real soundtrack. 97 does have a baller attract sequence, though.
  • Top Hunter - Have always found this one quite dull.
  • Blue's Journey - Never could understand the love for this game. Don't care if it's an "arcade platformer" - was released the same year as Mario World and Sonic 1. If my parents bought me a Neo-Geo with this game in 1991 instead of a Mega Drive with Sonic, pretty sure 10 year old me would have been pissed.

If Blue's Journey came out for any other home console it would be long long forgotten. Being pretty much the only platformer on the system has allowed it to stay in people's minds way more than it deserves.

Top Hunter is a pretty bad game. But it has potential. A sequel that got the attention it needed would probably have been an awesome game.

Bring on the koalas, but for me it's MOTW. I totally respect it, but I just can't get into this game. And I've tried so many times. I love the Real Bouts, and MOTW is just so bland in comparison.

I'll second this - I like MOTW enough, but I'll take any RB game over it any day.

I like Ninja Combat lol. Though admittedly it's due to the nostalgia, it is a quite average/below average game. I still like to play it from time to time.

Im not a sports/driving fan so stuff like Ultimate 11, Football Frenzy, Street Hoop and Overtop/Driftout I just never saw the point. 'Specially playing a driving game with a stick.. just weird. Played Riding Hero once and was just like.. eh.

Super Dodgeball I do like, but mainly because I was a huge fan of the original arcade/NES (moreso NES) versions. Oh and Turfmasters is golf perfection so that doesn't count.

I love Windjammers, you guys are cray. Its hilariously fun with friends.

I don’t know anyone that actually likes Blues Journey.
