It’s a quite treacherous 2 mile journey!

At the dealership now for some maintenance. Here’s the new version

I was actually commenting on the aftermarket snorkel air intake on the first pic. Looks so goofy. There are a few Jeeps around here with a similar setup and always think to myself: "whoa, buddy! Be honest: you're not going to be 'fording the river' anytime soon."

It's very rugged... bit like you Moe.

"Land Cruiser's powertrain combines hybrid tech with an impressive turbo 4-cylinder hybrid engine"

Nothing says rugged like a high strung turbo 4 moving a multi ton truck.

Edit: Also, I pulled that description from Toyota's page, what the hell does it mean to "combine hybrid tech with [a] ... hybrid engine". Double hybrid?

Yeah it’s nuts..Toyota has that 4 cylinder turbo hybrid set up in the new Tacoma, 4Runner and the Land Cruiser. The Lexus equivalent though has a v6.

Meh... I wouldn't know. I drive an SRT Durango with a 392 Hemi... About as interested in hybrids as cutting my bollocks off.

Seriously, imagine if the owners of these vehicles came here and saw this.

Gaiz,

My Fit is making rattling noises when I start braking and when I'm fully braked. If I switch to neutral, still braked, it stops. Anyone have ideas? I'm wondering if this is something I could take care of myself. Context: I can change a tire. Haven't done much else.

Fully braked meaning at a stop?

Rattling can be old rusting exhaust heat shields. Although I'm trying to think why it would stop when in neutral if it was a heat shield. It's possible it stops in neutral because there is just less drivetrain vibration.

If it does happen at idle but only in gear, you could get someone you really trust to put it in gear and stay on the brakes while you crawl around under it although I imagine there isn't much ground clearance on a Fit.

I've ripped heat shields away when they're loose and rattling before. Depends on how much you care about your car but it will usually be fine without it, you could search around for some model specific info.

Spent Monday night from about 5pm until midnight replacing an exhaust manifold/catalytic converter. I've had an intermittent P0430 code for a while now, it would come and go sometimes and I managed to sneak it past two years worth of emissions testing by clearing the code and running it just long enough to go to a ready state but before it tripped the CEL but as time went on it was on more than it was off and it has been fully on since the last inspection and won't stay off long even after clearing codes.

Fortunately this was Bank 2 so the radiator side. I don't think I could attempt Bank 1, the firewall side one, in my garage.

I expected this to be tough, in the end it was tough, but not awful just tight space to work, constantly banging my hands into things, finding the right combination of tools, sockets, and extensions to reach things. Plus my car has an oil cooler (tow package) that is helpfully in the way of half of the exhaust manifold studs that the car in the YouTube video did not have so that made things even tighter. One exhaust flange nut rounded off (only had a 12 point impact, should have known better and went to harbor freight to grab some 6 pointers).

So once I took a couple cooldown breaks and finally managed to cut the one exhaust flange nut off and get the old manifold studs safely out without breaking anything else, reassembly was pleasant by comparison. Cleared the codes and fingers crossed that's the only issue, the catalytic converter medium visible through the ports was crumbling in spots so it definitely wasn't in great shape. Before my last tuneup I had developed a misfire on that bank, definitely could have caused the damage.

Then Tuesday night was wheel bearings. One rear bearing was making noise and I decided to do both sides just because. I had been sort of dreading this because there are plenty of of horror stories about getting them out of the knuckle (bimetallic corrosion) but it went much better than I feared. A few good tips of how to best use the 'hit the tool with a big ass sledgehammer' lever style remover meant that it took 6-10 good bangs to get them out.

5-8:30 and I was done with both sides.

Was too frustrated I guess to take any photos of the manifold.

Sorry - I didn’t see this. You’re right. It was the heat shield. Which is annoying because I just replaced the splash guard last month. I also had to replace two of the rotors.

Anyone driven one of these?

No, but that sounds like my kinda car. I briefly drove that gen 5.0 that my brother in law owned and it was a cool car but it seemed like too much engine for that small a car.

Kinda funny how history repeats itself. Nobody wants the more recent Camaro or Mustang turbo 4s, but they kill on the track since they're lighter and better balanced than the V8s.

I mean… its because it’s a 4.
I want no new GM, or any other vehicleat all really- theyre all shit, but talking with friends who contemplate that midlife crisis, its a fuckin 4. No chance.

The turbo 4 Camaro actually gets better lap times than the V8, and tears up autocross courses in particular. There's no shame in that car, other than not being able to see out the sides of the damn thing.

You gotta understand the GM crowd.

I think people don't trust the longevity of the turbo 4s. The Mustang SVO engine appears to be much better built than the current line of Ecoboosts. I almost bought a Focus SVT some years ago but I didn't really need another car at the time. Those also seem to hold up pretty well with normal maintenance.
