Luis Ortiz vs Charles Martin on New Year's Day.

Ortiz: 37-2, 27 KOs, both losses were knockouts in world title challenges against Deontay Wilder

Martin: 28-2-1, former IBF heavyweight champion of the world

Martin is infamous as a champion, though. The title he won was stripped from Tyson Fury during his mental health/steroids/cocaine layoff, and Martin won the vacant belt simply by default: his opponent took an awkward step, blew his knee out, couldn't stand, never fought again. Technical knockout.

And then just 85 days later, Martin was blasted out in 2 rounds by Anthony Joshua in Joshua's first title challenge.

Martin has spent the rest of his career trying to prove he isn't a joke. Well, a win against King Kong Ortiz would do a long way.

Also of interest is both guys are southpaws. Very rare at heavyweight. Fury and Usyk both switch-hit, but these guys are true and full time southpaw heavyweights.

The only real question is how much Ortiz has in the tank. Skill and power wise he's orders of magnitude better than Martin, but he'll also be just 2 months shy of his 43rd birthday by the time the fight rolls around. And those two devastating Wilder KOs had to take a lot out of him.

I'll be rooting for Ortiz. I'd love to see him get a fight against Usyk or Fury; he's the only other heavyweight that is remotely close to their skill level and about midway between the two in terms of size.

Also, guess what UFC president Dana White was during during a world title match at UFC 268?

You guessed it, watching Canelo vs Plant!

Holy shit Canelo.

Remember when we thought he might move back up to light heavyweight to fight the champions there?

Well he's jumping all the way past that to cruiserweight. The WBC has approved Canelo as a challenger to Illunga Makubu, the reigning cruiserweight titlist.

If Canelo wins, his resume becomes even more absurd
Super Welterweight: WBC/WBA/Ring/Lineal (lost in a unification to Floyd)
Superwelterweight second run: WBO
Middleweight: WBA/WBC/IBF/Ring/Lineal
Super Middleweight: WBA/WBC/IBF/WBO/Ring/Lineal undisputed
Light Heavyweight: WBO
Cruiserweight?

If he wins he'll become a five division world champion. The only five division world champions in history are:
1. Hitman Tommy Hearns
2. Sugar Ray Leonard
3. Oscar De La Hoya
4. Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
5. Manny Pacquiao

That's it. That's the kind of list Canelo is trying to add his name to.

Legendary fighters Sugar Ray Leonard, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr, and Roberto Duran eating at the same table at the WBC convention last week.

Four of the ten greatest living fighters at one table. Arguably four of the ten greatest who ever lived. Due respect to Big George, Pac, DLH, and Hitman Hearns; they're about the only other dudes who could walk into this photo and belong there.

Not a bad card on DAZN tonight:

Demetrius Andrade vs. Jason Quigley, 12 rounds, for Andrade's WBO middleweight title
Murodjon Akhmadaliev vs. Jose Velasquez, 12 rounds, for Akhmadaliev's IBF and WBA junior featherweight titles
Julio Cesar Martinez vs. McWilliams Arroyo, 12 rounds, for Martinez's WBC flyweight title
Kali Reis vs. Jessica Camara, 10 rounds, for Reis' WBA and IBO, vacant WBO junior welterweight titles
Thomas O'Toole vs. Mark Malone, 4 rounds, light heavyweights
Demsey McKean vs. TBA, 6 rounds, heavyweights

Andrade fighting another bum. Would be hilarious if he lost though.

The other three title fights should be good.

Rooting for Kali Reis. She turned pro and got thrown to the wolves. In her first 21 fights she faced Cecilia Braekhus (the GOAT), Christina Hammer twice, Hanna Gabriels, Tori Nelson, Mikaela Lauren, etc. She lost those fights but she's learned a lot and late in her career she's putting it all together.

If she wins this fight she'll set up an undisputed WBA/WBC/IBF/WBO/IBO/Ring/Lineal undisputed unification fight against Chantelle Cameron.

Women's boxing isn't nearly as deep talent-wise compared to the men, but the good thing about it is the best fight the best. We could have as many as six undisputed women's world champion by the end of next year.

That's 8. Presumably there are 10 people who would belong in a 10 greatest living fighters conversation.

Canelo has the tight attitude. Makes boxing exciting, perpetually testing himself. Great stuff. He has a seat at that table maybe soon

Canelo's problem is there aren't a lot of HOF caliber guys for him to fight right now. He missed out on Hopkins, DLH, Froch, Calzaghe, RJJ, Ward, etc. Not his fault that he came up when he did, of course.

He beat Mosley and Cotto, clear HOFers. He fought Floyd and GGG and went 1-1-1 but should've been 0-3-0.

He has plenty of damn good wins, but not very many incredible wins. Kovalev, Jacobs, Smith, Cintron, Baldomir, Vazquez, N'Dou, Khan, Plant, Saunders, N'Dou, Lara (arguably beat Canelo too) are all damn fine fighters but none of the are HOF guys. Kovalev is borderline.

Canelo is, by far, the pound for pound best fighter in the world right now. But it's just barely the wrong era for a fighter of his weight. If he had come along 12 years earlier we could've seen some legendary wars.

Putting away Khan, the way he did it, that was maybe his most spectacular sin. He shut that mouth.
What you say is really interesting

Reis vs Camara was a WAR

I scored it 96-94 Reis but it could've easily been 95-95 or 96-94 Camara.

The bumslayer strikes again.

Andrade, who has zero quality wins, called out other fighters for fighting weak opposition. Literally seconds after he fought his 31st no-hoper out of 31 fights.

Unbelievable.

Terence Crawford vs Shawn Porter tonight.

Potential fight of the year. Crawford is as good as anyone and Porter has never been in a boring fight in his life.

Great fight tonight.

In real time I thought maybe Kenny Porter stopped it too soon, but then Shawn was still on wobbly legs like 35 seconds after the stoppage. That's great corner work from him; it's not always easy for a father.

Crawford has now fought 16 straight world title fights in 3 different divisions, winning all 16 with 13 KOs. Only Ricky Burns, Rey Beltran, and Viktor Postol went the distance with him since 2016.

Crawford is also now 9-0 against other world champion opponents with wins over Shawn Porter, Kell Brook, Amir Khan, Jeff Horn, Julius Indongo, Viktor Postol, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Rey Beltran, and Ricky Burns.

Errol Spence was in the crowd for the fight; hopefully he's healthy and they can make Spence vs Crawford immediately. That's the lineal fight at 147; the winner would have all the belts except Ugas' WBA Super belt.

Porter was looking good for throughout the fight. If it had gone the distance he would've had a chance.

He's just so calm. He knows exactly what Porter wants to do and he gets there a step before he does. It was only a matter of time.

Holy SHIT

George Kambosos just whooped Teofimo Lopez to become the WBA, WBO, IBF, Ring Magazine, and Lineal lightweight world champion. He was a 13-1 underdog coming in.

Great fight but Kambosos clearly got the win, although one crooked judge scored it for Lopez.

Kambosos has now won three fights in a row by split decision: former IBF world lightweight champion Mickey Bey, former IBF featherweight champion Lee Selby, and now undefeated, unified, lineal lightweight world champion Teofimo Lopez.

Hopefully he gets Devin Haney, Tank Davis, or Ryan Garcia next.

Kambosas fought a great fight. He never backed down and I think that surprised Teofimo. I'm glad he survived the 10th.

Teofimo needs to fire his Dad. He kept giving him awful advice in the corner.

Teofimo claims making weight was an issue, the reason he lost, and the is moving up. I'm surprised he made weight for this fight. I want to see him fight Lomachenko before he moves up.

There's no reason to revisit the Lomachenko fight. Loma fought scared and lost the first seven and the 12th cleanly. Maybe it could've gone differently but it didn't and now Loma has to live with the result. Lopez can't make 135 anymore and Loma would be crazy to move up to 140.

Anyway, Fulton vs Figueroa is a hell of a fight on Showtime right now.
