Luis Ortiz vs Charles Martin on New Year's Day.
Ortiz: 37-2, 27 KOs, both losses were knockouts in world title challenges against Deontay Wilder
Martin: 28-2-1, former IBF heavyweight champion of the world
Martin is infamous as a champion, though. The title he won was stripped from Tyson Fury during his mental health/steroids/cocaine layoff, and Martin won the vacant belt simply by default: his opponent took an awkward step, blew his knee out, couldn't stand, never fought again. Technical knockout.
And then just 85 days later, Martin was blasted out in 2 rounds by Anthony Joshua in Joshua's first title challenge.
Martin has spent the rest of his career trying to prove he isn't a joke. Well, a win against King Kong Ortiz would do a long way.
Also of interest is both guys are southpaws. Very rare at heavyweight. Fury and Usyk both switch-hit, but these guys are true and full time southpaw heavyweights.
The only real question is how much Ortiz has in the tank. Skill and power wise he's orders of magnitude better than Martin, but he'll also be just 2 months shy of his 43rd birthday by the time the fight rolls around. And those two devastating Wilder KOs had to take a lot out of him.
I'll be rooting for Ortiz. I'd love to see him get a fight against Usyk or Fury; he's the only other heavyweight that is remotely close to their skill level and about midway between the two in terms of size.
