Anyone collect board games? Just babbling about them.

I’m glad solo/solitaire play is really a thing now. People used to think I was crazy when I told them I had single player ONLY board games circa ‘06-‘07, lol.

If you like war games there are many great solitaire ones.

Buddy of mine plays non-solo friendly games solo.

He legit will just take on the role of 2-4 people and go at it--dude is a lunatic.

Many of the 'non-solo' co-op games require at least 2 characters in order to even play them.

The Resident Evil boardgames from Steamforged all but require all four characters active on the map. Luckily, managing the characters is very simple and the enemies are automated so the rules set makes it simple.

There are many times when I don't want to sit at a table exchanging game progression with others but still want to play a board game. My wife would sit with me, observe the game, offer suggestions on strategy and help me clarify rules when I didn't understand them. I like to think a part of her is still there with me, helping me figure it out. It's therapeutic and helps with the grief that comes now and again. Good memories make for good times.

That’s definitely how I used to learn board games.
Now with the marvel of streaming video, it's so easy to look up a tutorial on YouTube and get a better understanding of the rules of play. Sometimes, those booklets don't make sense so it's nice to listen to and watch someone tell you what to do.

I used to download PDFs of rule books of games I was interested in to read them for…fun.

I would print them out too :emb:

The bulk of my game collection is definitely pre-heavily monetized YouTube/pre-kickstarter FOMO/When Fantasy Flight Games was still good :emb:

I can see the appeal of video though. Any of you guys active on board game geek?

I will lurk on boardgamegeek for rules clarifications when they come up in my searches but I don't actively post there and I don't have a profile.

Does anyone here have the Metal Gear Solid board game? I was never big into board games but I’m ready to goob out with this whenever there’s a second printing.

I thought it looked fun and almost backed it, but it was kind of pricey for what's actually in the box.

Has pretty solid reviews though.

I own it.

But, of course, I haven't played it yet.

If/when I do, I'll let you know what I think of it.

However, if you want a nice detailed breakdown of the game, you can hardly do better than the YT channel One Stop Co-Op Shop for analysis and playthroughs.

I also want to say game companies that release their games in boxes too small to fit the materials after the cards have been sleeved are gay.

I've drastically improved my useless purchasing, but that doesnt mean i'm not doing it. I still have a stack of big box games that I've never played. I've sorted, organized, and even painted some of them. But I've never even had them close to the table. Part of me enjoys sorting everything out. I'll watch a movie and get it all organized neatly into token trays.

My pending Kickstarters is down to 2 major games and a couple small indie ones.

I wish I could solo game, but I can't. I'm the person that couldn't read a choose your own adventure book without cheating. There's very little chance I can pull it off with a boardgame. The closet I get is Deep Space D6. Probably the only solo game where I can play legit, because you dont always know your bad decisions.

Sleeving cards and sorting and organizing boardgames is very therapeutic. Very zen like for me. I got the same feeling during my Gunpla buliding phase. It's a vibe. Nerd meditation.

I somehow have two copies of Mage Knight: Ultimate Edition.

To my horror, I discovered one hidden behind a bunch of boxes while reorganizing my storage room.

I've never opened either one.

TBH, I was very disappointed in myself that day.

Mage Knight rules.

That was the first heavy game my buddy showed me and it's still one of my favorites.

Oh I believe in the game's quality. It's why I bought it.

But forgetting I'd ever bought a copy and then getting a second one made me sad for myself.

Been playing Little Alchemists and Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle with the kids.

Little Alchemists has been good fun for them, they mostly get how to play. For me it is pretty light. The deduction emulates big Alchemists but is nowhere near as satisfying and the game mechanics are stripped completely bare. So I'm glad I bought it but I want to run through a game of Big Alchemists with them at some point just to see how it goes.

Hogwarts Battle is good since it is co-op we can play somewhat open handed and give suggestions. The game is also surprisingly tough.

Got to play Quacks of Quedlinburg with neighbors. It's good, not something I would buy but I can see why it's popular. Kind of the same feel as Azul. Something we often bring along for a game with non-'gamer' people. Easy enough to explain, doesn't take too long, and by the second game you'll feel like you get it. Kingdomino also filled that spot for me for something even lighter but still fun.

Otherwise I haven't bought anything, been trying to purge piles of junk from the garage with mixed success. Some will have to end up at thrift stores or in the trash if I don't have success moving it for a few bucks on Facebook Marketplace.

All right, now you have to play Escape the Dark Castle with them next.

Great turn based card game with old school aesthetics, a lethal difficulty curve and very nicely streamlined rules on every card.

It plays kind of like a card game version of Dungeon Crawl Classics' funnel concept where none of the playable characters are adventurers but every day people with names based on their professions: Smith, Baker, Cobbler, etc. There's a sci-fi variant called Escape the Dark Sector.

The expansions add new bosses and challenges and new characters. One of the expansions even has adventurers that you can recruit to help you escape. One of them is clearly modeled after Geralt of Rivia.

The storage box also has some expansion materials in it. Being a 'rules lite' game, it gives itself over to easy additions.

On an entirely different note, I MAY be receiving a call from Larry Elmore this weekend. I wanted to go to Gary Con this year to have him autograph my Art III book, which I backed on KS but couldn't afford an autographed version due to prioritizing my wife's medical health needs. I contacted him today on his website and got a hit back in e-mail where I told them I can't get in to Gary Con because the badges are all sold out and if there's a way to get my book autographed to my wife and me, that would be so great. When he was still going to Gen Con, we would make a point to visit his table, chat with him, buy something from him and listen to his stories of the good old days when TSR was blazing the trail for this industry. I know he's old and retired, but he still goes to Gary Con because that is where the luminaries from his era still go to visit with fans and hawk their new wares. Gen Con is just too busy and doesn't really respect him or any of the hobby's founders anymore. They're all old white men and clearly racists and sexists. Even though Margaret Weis has pushed back on this many times.

One time someone asked her in an interview to talk about all of the women whose voices were suppressed during that era and she said. "Who are these women? Where are they? Who do you speak of? The editor of fiction at TSR was a woman and she made the decision to go forward with Dragonlance novels because the company thought they would make money.' Love Margaret for not joining the fag woke mob that has gaslit us for nearly 30 years. We're still being bullied and fuck off if you think differently. Miss me with that 'white people were always the bad guys' shit. Well, NOW they are. Younger millenials are the fuckiing worst and they need the conch taken away from them.

Sorry. Tangent.

His rep asked me if I was available to take a call on Sunday between 2 and 3. I told him I would make the time.
