I want this movie to be good but I have a bigger problem with the idea of yet another Alien film.

What used to be the most terrifying monster design in cinema history has turned into a victim of its own success.

Alien movies don't ever end with the creature winning. You know that one at a time, the cast will get picked off by the supposedly 'perfect organism' only to get tricked and then get killed.

Aliens was the perfect denouement to this series. A woman returning to something resembling hell to take back what the creature stole from her in the first film-her entire life. In a lot of ways, the alien in the first film 'killed' Ripley and she had to go and reclaim all of that, as embodied by Newt.

Ripley literally punching the queen mother of all aliens in the face with a forklift was the absolute highpoint for this narrative and this monster. There is nowhere else for this franchise to go unless they want to take a chance and have the monster win.

The whole idea of

Spoiler:
the alien in Romulus being derived from whatever was left over of the very first monster

is so bad and misguided on every conceivable level that it smacks of self aggrandizement.

'Look at me doing my art!'

That said, I'm a dope and will probably still see it.

I think best case scenario, this movie is a copy of Alien, but on a planet surface.
If that's the aim, I think it'll be alright. The Alien universe needs to get back on board with slow dread and not a giant action movie with a bunch of alien fodder.

Judging by Alvarez's previous movies one of which is already a fairly good remake/reboot Romulus is going to be at most 20% story and 80% horror.
Bumparoo Banzai.

So against my better judgement, & as a boredom reliever, I watched this yesterday. In terms of percentages, it was basically 10% horror(single jumpscare), 30% retcon horseshit, 20% James Bond villain expository dialogue, 10% weird racial undertones, & 30% Mandatory Disney Girlboss empowerment/absurd feats/plot armor garbage.

At least the sets' design/fabrication, atmosphere, practical effects, & cinematography were all pretty damned amazing throughout.

Regarding the weird racial undertones, would you say that it aligns with the modern bent in Hollywood to engage in racial politics?

Also, regarding the mandatory disney girlboss stuff, can you tell us what makes it different from Ripley in the first and second films in terms of a heroine taking the forefront? I'm not challenging you, mind you. And I think you know my mind on faget feminism in modern creative expression. I'm just wondering what makes it different from what we've already seen in this franchise. Feel free to spoilertag and spoil for me. It's not like I haven't seen Alien before.

It's getting pretty solid reviews. I knew from the trailers that the characters were all going to be pretty crappy, a bunch of douchy looking diverse 20 somethings. The production design is supposed to fantastic and they jettisoned most of the garbage lore from Prometheus/Covenant. The bar is low but it looks like this mostly delivers, or at least isn't a complete embarrassment.

Metacritic scores
Alien - 89
Aliens - 84
Alien 3 - 59
Alien Resurrection - 63
Prometheus - 64
Alien Covenant - 65
Alien Romulus - 64

Pretty much right in line with the last four movies in the franchise.

You just wanted to post a list and numbers.
"this is getting solid reviews, it's not an embarrassment like Prometheus and Covenant"
"it's getting the exact same reviews as Prometheus and Covenant"
".... shut up"

Did I read correctly that this takes place after Alien and before Aliens?

I personally really like the last two. I like seeing Scott coming through in the direction, and I just really like the atmosphere and set pieces. For what it is.
Not expecting too much with this last one but It'll be nice to go to the cinema with the wife and the kids whatever happens

Okay, let me put this a way you're more likely to comprehend.

- Aggregate review site scores mean fuck all
- It's been out for 1 day
- Reviewers that I find reliable seem to be mostly positive
- I have faith in Alvarez judging by his previous work and it seems that people that have also enjoyed that are enjoying this

I don't know why you have to argue everything, oh wait yeah I do. It's so you can post autistic lists like a robot. Your obsession with numbers, lists and stats isn't an opinion, it's just regurgitation. But you're the same guy that judges movie quality on how much money a movie makes so the information you provide is useless. You can't argue someones personal opinion with stats.

That's what I thought, you have nothing to say outside of regurgitating numbers.

Also you replied so fast your response was there by the time I refreshed the page. That's just sad man.

Not unless someone else wants to jump in. There's no point in talking to him, all he has is numbers and lol u mad bro.

Next time I'll try adding more numbers for him, maybe just throw a jar of pennies on the floor. That should keep him busy for a while.
Well the universe is a greatly unjust place or those rating systems don't mean anything because 3 and Resurrection deserve a far worse score than any of the rest of them.

I still vividly remember my feelings of disappointment almost 25 years later after seeing Resurrection at a dollar theater.
I was in the mood to watch an Alien movie and trying to kill some time with a friend so it's not like I was mad about my loss of time or money either.
