There is no rational explanation for it.

The problem with pinball (aside from the wicked upkeep and specific knowhow) is that I'd only ever want to own just one machine, whereas with arcades, from whatever era, there's a ton I'd love to own.

I am not a huge fan of pinball. I use to own Baby Pacman though and that was pretty cool, since it combined pinball with pac man. However, if it is a choice between pinball and a video game, it would be pretty much any decent video game.
