I skipped the PS4 generation (except for Switch), but now that I've got a PS5, I'm looking to pick up the STGs I skipped. Here's what I have, post-360.
  • Dangun Feveron
  • Aleste Collection
  • Cotton Reboot
  • ESP.Ra.De
I have all the Xbox 360 Cave stuff, and I'm assuming the rereleased versions of stuff like Mushihimesama and Galuda2 are inferior, but correct me if I'm wrong. Here's what I'm aware of:
  • KikiKaikai (not clear on what's included)
  • Cotton Rock'n'Roll (is this any good?)
  • Wolf Fang / Skull Fang
  • M2 DOJ (going to buy this)
  • Game Tengoku Cruisin' Mix (going to buy this as well I think)

Let me know what I should pick up and if the PS4/5 version is better than the Switch version. Also, I'm not super interested in 8- or 16-bit console rereleases I can just play on an Everdrive. I'm especially interested in M2 stuff.

Marvin thanks you for the help.

This.

If not going the physical media route, it's worth noting that there are some DLC games of theirs that are (or were?) only available in the JP playstation store such as Esp RaDe... unsure if this has changed recently, however. But if not, you can easily set up a PSN ID on the .jp site and use that login on your PS5 to download games that way which is what I have done.

Yeah definitely Garegga and the Ketsui port is easily better than the 360 and PS3 ports.

Cotton Rock n Roll/Fantasy is worth getting if you liked Reboot. It's basically what Cotton Boomerang was to Cotton 2.
The Rayz Collection (the proper one that includes Rayforce)
Mahou Daisakusen

It's a good rule of thumb that the PS4/5 version of just about anything is superior to the Switch versions. Especially for shmups because the input lag is usually a lot less and sometimes the frame rate is better.

It's on PS5, but if you like R-Type get Final 3 Evolved while you can. It's a updated version of R-Type Final 2 from PS4. These NIS games on PS5 go out of stock fast and quickly jump to over $100.00 used. A lot of them even get pulled from the NIS website and you don't even know they exist.

Just a heads up Amazon has these for $15 each.

Cotton Reboot
Cotton Fantasy
Darius Burst Another Chronicle Alpha Reload EX?2A!@+

G-Darius HD is also $20 but I think that's it's normal price.

Great game, looks fantastic, hard as balls or else I’m just really shitty at shmups. Or maybe both.

Some recent releases:
Under Defeat HD - Looks about the same as the 360/PS3 version, if you missed it back then.
Viper Phase 1 - Seibu at the top of their game, finally got a home release just now. Note there's a known issue on PSN that may make it hard to purchase right now, so may have to wait a few days if it interests you.

I really like VP1. Hard as balls, but super cool that it finally is on consoles.

Which version of VP1 is it? One is considerably easier when it comes to the boss fights if I remember correctly.

Can confirm that VP1 isn't listed on PSN at the moment. I'll check back tomorrow.

I couldn't get into VP1 when I had the PCB. Not sure which version I had but hopefully it was the harder one. Seemed pretty brutal.

It’s not a matter of harder or easier…not a one size fits all hat. It’s relative. Difficulty is the same for both versions. Play style and weapon load out mesh to equal your level of struggle in this game.

Do you like timed meter power stocks (limited ammo, fully powered up/really powerful) for your secondary weapon? Then original version is for you.

Do you like your secondary weapons to be permanent, but accept the trade off of less powerful shots due to your ammo now being unlimited? Then new version is for you.
