Hey guys,

I've cleaned an MVS cart multiple times and keep getting exception error handling messages. I've gotten read, write, and illegal instruction messages. I know the usual solution is to clean the contacts but I have scrubbed these things to the point where I'm getting zero residue on my Q-tips. Any ideas? Previously, I've gotten these messages to stop by cleaning it but that's apparently not helping this time.

Here's the error that's currently on my screen...

Illegal Instruction

Address: 10180C2E

D/A Registers

D0 = 000001FF
D1 = FFE0000
D2 = 00000000
D3 = 00000084
D4 = FFEF0000
D5 = 00220043
D6 = 00000000
D7 = 00000000

SSP = F7DC9FFF
SP = 2018

What are you using to clean? If you aren't using deoxit, I highly recommend it as it also PROMOTES a connection.

I'm using isopropyl alcohol. I'll pick up Deoxit in the future though. Thanks for the tip.

Do these errors exclusively mean that the contacts are dirty? Or could there be a different issue?

What Xian Xi said, Rubbing alcohol may not be cutting it. Deoxit will remove tarnish unlike rubbing alcohol.

Have you cleaned your mvs motherboard's contact pins?

Other things that can cause errors are currupted backupRAM, bad backupRAM, failing PSU. From the message error mesage you have given above its clear the 68000 address registers are corrupting for some reason.

Until you get the Deoxit try clearing the backupRAM. In fact turn all harddips on and power on the system. It will cycle through a RAM/backupRAM test. Leave it for 30 minutes powered on and confirm no errors are reported. Then turn all harddips off and try the game again.

Those white polymer erasers will remove a lot of stuff a q-tip leaves behind.
Lay the board with the contanct portion flat on a table edge and scrub the contacts with a good amount of pressure.
The eraser will polish the contacts pretty damn well. Then clean the residue with isopropyl.

Thanks, guys. I cleared the RAM and did the RAM test for 45 minutes with no errors. I almost immediately got this error when playing the game. Not sure what this means.

Address Error

D0: 00000124
D1: 00005000

D7: 00000001

Edit: By the way, this is the only cart I'm having issues with. I don't get these errors with any other games or my minty copy of the same game.

It's my beat up copy of Rage of the Dragons. (I was testing it before shipping it off to a member who is buying it off of me.)

I'm not familiar with the Game Cart CRC Check. How do I do this?

Thanks for the help!

Nvm - found the CRC Check option. I ran it 6 times and everything came back fine. Definitely scratching my head.

I think you need to open up the cart and see what is up with the contacts. This will allow you to see the cartridge connectors and do a much better job cleaning them (either via White Art Eraser or Deoxit) which this cartridge might need.

This is a game known to have problems on some MVS boards. There is a thread somewhere with a fix you can do to the PCB.

Ahhhh, OK I feel slightly less insane, now. I'm going to ship it to the buyer and see if it works on his motherboard. Will report back. The weird thing is that my other copy of the same game has worked fine so far. Maybe there was a revision to the boards or something...

Maybe that cart already has the fix applied.

I think the fix involved moving a jumper or two.
