There was a time he could do no wrong. As much as I loved the Ninja Gaiden games, I also loved DOA 3 and Ultimate almost as much.

I never heard his name again after that Wii U game Devil’s Third. Never played that one…the protagonist seemed like he would annoy the shit out of me, so I never gave it a chance.

I enjoyed Devil’s Third for what it was back then and completed quite a few playthroughs of Wanted: Dead. I respect his vision for gameplay, and in the post Souls-like game boom that we are currently in, it would have been interesting to see his take on the mechanics of the action and fighting genre again.

I bet I'd probably like Devil's Third if I gave it a try today. Back then, it just didn't seem to be clicking for me or for those that I trusted to opine on it.

I also respect his uncompromising vision for game design. Probably gave people he worked with a headache, but visionaries usually do.

I never heard of Wanted: Dead, will check out some videos later today

Oh, and if you like photo mode in games with sexy women in them, I'd recommend Stellar Blade. With all the recent additions and changes and costumes, you won't be disappointed if that is your thing. And it's a pretty good hack and slasher with a killer soundtrack to boot.

Photo modes in games interest me for 5-10 minutes before I get bored but I appreciate when a game includes them. The Spider-Man games from Insomniac implemented it very well and you can do a lot of fun and funny Spidey style selfies with it.

I’ve heard good things about that game, but the only “modern” console I have is a switch

Will probably pick up a ps5 at some point. I tried getting one of those sexy 30th anniversary ones, but no dice

I wouldn't say Stellar Blade is not a reason to buy a console, but if you already own a PS5, I consider it a 'must own', as there are desperately few titles on the platform that can be classified as such.

I would consider the Dermon's Souls remake a reason to buy a PS5, but not at the prices it was going for at the time of the game's release if you are reasonable person about these things.

When it came out, you either had to write a computer script to autopurchase a PS5 for you through an online big box website when they were sparingly being released (my nephew's friend did just that) or you had to pay inflated prices on eBay for one.

I ended up getting my PS5 for $700 because I had the money and I really wanted to play Demon's Souls. I don't regret the purchae one bit, as I've gotten a lot of use out of that console since them.

So, by my own logic I'm not a reasonable person about these things.

Granted I’m a fag and my shit is all retarded, but one of the main reasons i’d want a ps5 is to get a PS Portal.

I just picked up Wanted: Dead on G2A for like 4 bucks. Definitely worth it.

Finally had some time to finish up my Master Ninja run this weekend. Overall, a great version of the game. I’m curious to see what Team Ninja will choose to add in the next update/patch.

Wanted: Dead has been on my list of things to get. I miss those fun but kind of janky weird B level games like that. We used to get them all the time and there are a lot of hidden gems if you take the time to look.

Short, unpolished, usually hard but made by people who really “get” gaming.

New update for Ninja Gaiden 2 Black now available:

  • New Game+ – Added the ability to begin a new game on a difficulty level you have previously cleared with the weapons and Ninpo you obtained in your previous playthrough already unlocked. When starting a new game this way, your weapons and Ninpo will be reverted to level 1.
  • Photo Mode – Added Photo Mode to the in-game Options Menu. You can move the camera around within a set limit to take screenshots.
  • Ability to Hide Projectile Weapon – Added a “Show Projectile Weapon” option under “Game Settings” in the Options Menu, which allows you to hide your projectile weapon while it is carried on your back.
Adjustments

  • Lowered the HP of enemies in Ch. 8, “City of the Fallen Goddess.”
  • Lowered the HP of enemies in Ch. 11, “Night in the City of Water.”
  • Raised the number of enemies in Ch. 13, “The Temple of Sacrifice.”
  • Raised the number of enemies in Ch. 14, “A Tempered Gravestone.”
  • Raised the damage dealt by some of Ayane’s attacks.
Bug Fixes

  • Fixed control issues that occurred when playing at over 120 frames per second or while under high computing load.
  • Fixed an issue where controllers would not vibrate based on computing load or frames per second settings.
  • Fixed bugs that caused the player to go out of bounds during certain chapters.
  • Fixed bugs that made it impossible to progress during certain chapters.
  • Fixed a bug which caused the game to crash during long play sessions.
  • Other minor bug fixes.

What are your impressions of the changes so far, sir?

Though I personally don’t like seeing the game being made easier without a toggle option for masochists such as myself, the balance changes made to the female chapters are fair for players who were struggling through them. Ayane in particular will benefit from the buffs the most and players will no longer have to mainly rely on her decapitation rate to consistently complete her chapter. The character buffs will go a long way towards helping the female chapters not feel like such an unforgiving slog for those who dread those chapters on higher difficulties.

It’s the handling of the enemy count adjustments that I feel mixed about. Increasing the enemy counts on Chapters 13 and 14 was a much needed change and those chapters now feel more intense and less sparse as a result. However…

Simply increasing the amount of overall enemies in an encounter such as the staircase has produced an unintended consequence (tested on Master Ninja difficulty). Now that more enemies spawn on the staircase (some drop from above, while others run down the stairs towards the player), the increased amount of enemies does help the encounter feel more epic, but since the HP values and delimb rates remain the same, the staircase now feels like a bit of a slog since enemies still survive multiple izuna drops and can still take forever to die. In contrast, though the xbox360 original infamously threw tons of enemies at the player in this segment, the enemies themselves could be dispatched quickly due to their higher de-limb rates and lower overall HP. Since NG2B has inherited the NGS2/NGS2+ “less enemies, but they have more HP and don’t de-limb as quickly” approach to encounter balancing, simply increasing enemy spawns doesn’t produce the same feel as the encounters in the xbox360. Fighting a larger number of spoungier enemies makes this fight feel more tedious than intended. The final large wave of IS claw ninjas they added at the end of the staircase fight was a nice touch though.

Overall, I think these changes are a step in the right direction and changes like this go a long way towards showing the audience that Team Ninja really is trying to make this a more definitive version of Ninja Gaiden 2.

Personally, I still want to see the incendiary shuriken, windmill shuriken, and Tests of Valor added back in. Opinions on balance is one thing, but missing weapons and content doesn’t benefit anyone imho.

I’m looking forward to future updates.

Great analysis and I'm glad to see Team Ninja continuing to adjust the game to try and make people happy. This will not only help make Ninja Gaiden 2: Black a better game but it will help them refine their balancing approach to the upcoming Ninja Gaiden 4. They aren't siloing themselves off. They are trying to get better.

That is the essence of this franchise, after all. Breaking barriers and suddenly realizing you've gotten better at the challenges.
