The order on the menu is the release order but not the story or gameplay progression order, so here is the way that makes the most sense from a gameplay perspective
Doom
Sigil
Sigil 2
Doom II: Hell on Earth
The Master Levels for Doom II
No Rest for the Living
Legacy of Rust
TNT Evilution
The Plutonia Experiment

Sigil and Sigil 2 have the Doom 1 weapon/enemy/texture set, so it doesn't make sense to play them after Doom II.

And you definitely want to do Evilution and Plutonia last, because they're so stupid hard. Trying to go back to NRFTL or Legacy of Rust after Plutonia would be like turning the difficulty down 5 levels.

Just started Legacy of Rust - damn! This feels like a legit Doom game from way back. Loving it!

Speaking of Doom - LRG is putting out an updated version of SNES Doom. They're dubbing it an FX Chip 3 or some shit. I was kinda' stoked thinking they would put some onboard FPGA or something on the cart to push it to the limit. Then I saw the footage from Quakecon and became completely uninterested.

It's a much better version of Doom on a Super Nintendo, but at the end of the day it's still Doom on a Super Nintendo.

The PS1 port is only the console port that is worth revisiting in 2024. It has everything from the Jag port plus most of the missing maps from Doom I and II, the cool lighting and ambient music, a total of 9 maps (7 new, 2 inherited from Jag) that are completely unique from any other official versions, Nightmare Spectres, etc. If you haven't checked out the GZDoom mod that lets you play the PS1 port in a PC sourceport, definitely check it out.

We did a multiplayer Ultraviolence run of Legacy of Rust last night. We only made it to level 3 before calling it a night. Good stuff but man, the traps.

It's way, way easier on multiplayer than single player too, because you get way better weapons way earlier in co-op.

Also you can kinda cheat the system by positioning one person in a safe space so if everyone dies they can respawn. Problem is in this stage if everyone enters a room it can become a trap and there are no safe places for anyone to hide. Really the hard part is there just isn't enough ammo for 4 dudes running around. There were times where we suicided on purpose just to get a few bullets. Other times I was out there trying to kung fu the weaker enemies since I had zero ammo.

For real - I am in the same boat. It's just insane. I am saving often and slowly inching through it lol

When your dad was a HS math/computer teacher you got sweet ass deals on Apple computers and that’s the way it was and we liked it.
I wanna say the PC one was 6 disks, but I've drank since then and the memory is fuzzy.

Hopefully they get that first patch out soon. There are a few glitches people are noticing, and they still need to enable cheats on the console versions.

Still, absolutely rock solid in comparison to the state the Unity port launched in a few years back. It was literally months before it was even as good as the Xbox 360 version.

I feel like my steamdeck now finally does what i bare minimum expected it to do when i got it 2 years ago. Play Doom well, and a fuckload of mods also with ease.

The main problem with the new port I've noticed is that sometimes when you load a save, the enemies end up targeting a non-existent player outside the map and some of them won't attack or engage with you until you damage them (then they behave like regular enemies). But people have already pointed it out to the developers on Doomworld, so I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

It's not consistent but it does happen. I ran into a room yesterday with like 8 revenants and they were all just running in circles trying to melee attack someone that wasn't there until I fired a rocket into the middle of them.

Ok yeah definitely have not experienced that at all. I thought you meant they were all just idling waiting for a bullet to be fired

Nope, they're actively trying to target one of your non-existent previous selves from before the save/load, if my understanding is correct.

I'm wondering now if Romero will use the new monsters in his 32 map megawad coming out next year. He's been working on it for quite a long while, but he also must have known that this update was coming because they'd have to have gotten his permission to include Sigil in the base package.

If you have Playstation Plus, the old Doom and Doom II listings (the Unity port) are now re-listed for download. So you can claim these, add them to you library, and that qualifies you to actually download the brand new port for free.
