And to celebrate its 20th anniversary, id decided to completely ignore it and release Doom I and II again. Because people like those games.

Yeah when I bought Doom 1&2 on Steam for $10, I saw Doom 3 was going for $4.... Yeah not worth it, no way I would play it for more than 20 minutes before just shutting it off. I could see trying Quake IV again, but I doubt I'd play it much longer.

I even prefer Heretic/Hexen (and the sequels) over Doom 3.
Doom 3 was a rad tech demo though. Applying lighting to textures was brilliant.

Oh don't get me wrong, I liked Doom 3 when it was released. I just doubt I would now. I could definitely see me enjoying Heretic and Hexen again as well. Those were pretty fun, same with Rise of the Triad.

Pro tip: they remastered it and re-released it on PC, Switch, Xbox One, and PS4 with a new episode because people still like it

The last time they released new original content for Doom 3 was BFG edition, which they had to bundle with a new port of Doom I and II and a brand new Doom II .wad (No Rest for the Living) just to make people care about it.
Prior to that, the last time they released new content for Doom 3 was Resurrection of Evil, which they also had to bundle with a new port of Doom I and II.

I also enjoyed Doom 3 at the time. Haven’t played it since. In terms of survival horror/Event Horizon type of feel a game like Dead Space a few years later was more successful.
I appreciate they tried something different but I’m glad they later really succeeded with Doom 2016 and Eternal.

True. It felt like a "one play through" type of game. Which makes sense given the overall landscape. Not something you go back to over and over.

I had the doom 3 bfg edition for ps3, and even in that short time gap the game already felt terribly dated and slow paced.

Man, I haven't put too much time into Doom 1 or 2 since the early 2000s or so I think. Holy shit I forgot how fun these games are, and how many of the levels I remember.... and don't remember. These games are truly classics

That means No Rest for the Living, Sigil, Sigil 2, and Legacy of Rust should all be entirely new to you. Be sure to check those out when you get to them. All are fantastic, all but Sigil 2 are included in the base package of the new release (and you can find Sigil 2 in the mod browser quite easily for free).

The order on the menu is the release order but not the story or gameplay progression order, so here is the way that makes the most sense from a gameplay perspective

The Plutonia Experiment
Sigil and Sigil 2 have the Doom 1 weapon/enemy/texture set, so it doesn't make sense to play them after Doom II.
And you definitely want to do Evilution and Plutonia last, because they're so stupid hard. Trying to go back to NRFTL or Legacy of Rust after Plutonia would be like turning the difficulty down 5 levels.

RE: Doom 3 I have fond memories of fucking around with that leaked alpha. Was essentially a tech demo, trying to get it to run well. Was basically like you in a corridor with a swinging lamp. I don’t even know if you could go through the door. I don’t think there were enemies.
I remember they even covered the leak on TechTV, maybe even on The Screensavers. Good times.
Doom 3 may have been the last PC game I bought boxed retail.
