Version 1.1
- fixed crash on level 3.2 caused by an original programming bug
Nice work! Interesting there was a bug that only crashes CD systems. The 8man license is probably the real reason it didn't get an official CD release though.

Here's a conversion tool for Legend of Success Joe. I'm not sure this has actually ever been converted and successfully run on real hardware.
I had to fix some bugs(?) in the original software to make it work.

I haven't put much time into it to play it, sound seems to run fine without most of the Z80 ROM.

Please let me know if you find any showstopping bugs with it.

No recording for this one, here's Neo Alec's review instead:

That’s a huge ask! Someone would actually have to play this.

I see the files in the folders, but don't see how to download them as a zip. Sorry, I'm not a github user.

No worries. On the main page, click the green "code" button and it will give you the option to download the repository as a zip file.

Here's another game converted.

Eightman!

Per the usual, I sampled and rebuilt the sound ROMs. Please note that compromises had to be made to get this all to fit in 1MB of space.
Some samples were cut -- the announcer during the demo/intro. Some samples are changed to point to similar sounds rather than have two similar sounds.

Note that there is an issue with capture where the main character disappears sometimes-my capture device captures at 30fps, missing every other frame. The character flashes every other frame, missing the non-flashing parts.

Thanks, game and audio works well, but I wanted to ask you if in the demo or during the game you with sd loader you can also a strong hiss random for a few seconds?

For some reason, the game blue screens on my SD loader. I provided a picture of the error since I'm not sure what it means. I checked the CRC's and they matched.

It does boot on Mister and retroarch for me but strangely not on my real hardware.

@NeoSeeD can you open the run me.bat and remove the files logo_u.prg, logo_j.prg, and logo_e.prg from the list and then rebuild the iso?
I cannot reproduce this on my end, but I have had the logo files cause some funkiness.

That did the trick. I was able to play the game through the SD loader from start to finish without any issue after removing those files from the list. Fantastic addition to the library. Thank you!

Edit: I noticed that this is the first conversion with quick loading screens between the stages. Could this open the possibility for bigger game conversions in the future?

Yes, but these are substantially more difficult than the prior conversions. I plan on doing a write-up soon.

What a masterpiece, iq_132! Congratulations for your dedication and the value you've brought to the SNK CD system. Before moving on to the more difficult games, I'd like to leave a few suggestions for smaller games that others tried to convert before, but failed. They are:

  • Nightmare in the Dark
  • Panic Bomber
  • Magical Drop 3
  • Zed Blade
  • Ghostlop
  • Money Puzzle Exchanger
  • King of Monsters 1
  • Goal Goal Goal
  • And, not least, Neo Bomberman.

Out of all of those, I've always found King of Monsters to be the strangest omission from the CD console. Especially since KOM2 was ported over.

Great job!!!

What do you think about the opposite, add music to CD to AES/MVS ports like Zintrick and Final Romance 2 ?

Thanks Kany :) Yes, better conversions from CD->AES/MVS are possible. I haven't really had anyone really express interest and I don't have good development hardware (a flash cart) to test on MVS, so it isn't a high priority.

This was almost done before Spin Master, but I had some trouble making things fit and work correctly. A break and a revisit and it seems to work ok.
Here's a link to the builder package. It is not extensively tested, because I am very bad at it.

*note*
The reporter/announcer is almost completely cut. There was simply not room for another 20-30 seconds of audio.

Here's a video of me getting destroyed at this game by the CPU

Hello iq_132 !!!! Tomorrow, I will burn a CD and test it on the NeoGeo CDZ. Last week, I tested Eightman and Spim Master, and they are running really well—99% perfect. As a suggestion, I'll keep smaller games like:

  • Nightmare in the Dark
  • Panic Bomber
  • Magical Drop 3
  • Zed Blade
  • Ghostlop
  • Money Puzzle Exchanger
  • Puzzle Bobble 2
Also, Goal Goal Goal, Challenges, Neo Bomberman, and Fight Fever

Awesome work! Do you think it would be possible to port some of SNK's other pre-Neo titles like Ikari? Or would the eight-way controls be a barrier?

How about some Irem stuff?

I know it would require a controller hack, but I'd love to see Beast Busters running on the Neo.

Ikari 3 is do-able. You need to keep in mind that these are ROM hacks, not proper, rebuilt games like what you see with the N64 Decomp. games, so it requires at the very least a Motorola 68K CPU and graphics hardware that is similar or weaker to what the NeoGeo has.

I know it would require a controller hack, but I'd love to see Beast Busters running on the Neo.
Unfortunately, a controller hack is the least of the problems porting Beast Busters. It's graphics hardware is leaps and bounds more powerful than what the NeoGeo can do.
