What makes a Blackberry so special to business men and such?

I notice a lot of lawyers, doctors, investors and the like carry them and swear by them.

What advantages does it have vs an iPhone, WP7 or Android?

What do you carry?

ive only heard the big draw is the blackberry messenger, but from what understand, the iPhone now has group messaging from any apple device which makes it the bomb... I'm just saying. I'll never use any other phone than my iPhone period

I currently have an Android. I made the switch from a Blackberry. BBM was nice, but I wasn't very impressed with the Blackberry otherwise.

Doctors and lawyers had mobile phones with messaging and such first, which meant Blackberry.

It's what they know and they've used it forever, so it's obviously the best. I've seen a lot of old Blackberry users that literally have to habitually stroke the little scroll wheels and such in their pockets. Giving up something like that is like not having a cigarette in your hand.

Not gonna argue that iPhones are any different really, given that 2 people can't even have dinner without sitting there texting the whole time..

The fact is that RIM hasn't innovated in a long time. They will be going the way of Polaroid soon.

A lot of it nowadays more has to do with the enterprise software solutions that a company has made available to their employees. That's it. To switch to something else means new solutions, new security checks, etc, so if people are fine with what they have and you can keep using what you have, go for it (especially if you are talking a large corporation, when you multiply it out by tens of thousands of devices, it adds up). Plus, a lot of people still don't like the fast change of technology and like something familiar. That's coming around though.

That's the main reason companies have stayed with Blackberry for so long, unrivaled security. The DoD is finally starting to switch over to Android, since it now offers comparable security features. Good ridance, Blackberry. LOL

I would be surprised if RIM isn't Bankrupt or bought up in the next 12 months.

Everyone I know who gets a work phone issued to them has a Blackberry and every single one of them hate the things.

I'm a big fan of Android, although I'd love to see a Linux distro like Mint or Debian come out with a phone OS.

I miss my blackberry very much as a road warrior. I travel 30-50% of the time so my mobile device is like a portable Office.

The blackberry is faster than an Iphone for the day to day activities of a businessman. Email is faster, calendar is faster, and typing is faster.
I have an Iphone now, and I rarely send emails on the road now. I used to write pages of emails on the BB, but now i write less than a few sentences with the iphone. Editing on the BB is slick and quick. Editing on the iphone is a bitch.

When you look at most apps, they are just standalone webpages. Blackberry apps are few, but i don't really use them.

The reason, as I was told, was that the BB offers encryption on messages that many other smartphones, including the iphone, do not. Personally I don't see the BB as secure really, knowing that data is going through Canada first.

BlackBerry phones have e-mail clients other phones only dream of.

I have one mainly because of the keyboard. I HATE typing on a damn touch screen.

Personally I use a 'burner' phone (i.e. cheap, reliable nokia that can easily and cheaply be replaced). I just don't have a need for a 'smartphone', although I've at one time or another owned them all (sans android). I'm never too far away from a computer/laptop with internet when needed to justify a smartphone and their monthly data plan.

I think at this point RIM's saving grace is BBM, but they're hanging from a thread these days, people are switching fast - the iPhone's iMessage may be the 'straw that broke the camel's back'. Needless to say it will be an interesting 2012 for RIM and their shareholders.

Seconded. I used to think people were absurd with their iPhone love affairs. Now I use mine more than my laptop, PS3, and CD player combined. The touch screen is more responsive than what I've seen in Droid offerings, and that was after six months of habitually walking into phone stores and trying out the latest models to try and find a reason not to get one.

I've had the Iphone4 for year, and typing will never be as good as a BB. Need to change something in the middle of a sentence? Good luck with your Iphone. You might as well rewrite the entire damn message instead of trying to edit on the Iphone.

The smart text does get much better as you use it more, but it's still not safe enough for work emails. I didn't need smart text with the BB...that's how much better it was.

BB also has BES, which is pretty easy to manage from an IT perspective.

lol, what the fuck is this shit? If I want to change something in the middle of a sentence, I press and hold down on the message, and an arrow appears and allows me to drag it to wherever I need it. It sounds like you're either unwilling, or unable to adapt to the phone. I guarantee I can type as fast as anybody with a Blackberry when using an iphone. I fucking promise that shit.

BB is secure, you just have to set up your devices to communicate with your BES/Exchange Servers. And your users have to carry around those silly smart card readers.
