Wow I didn't know Capcom helped build MVS carts...

Pretty sure I have a KOF 96 boot, but not sure on KOF 97 or 98. Any insight?

KOF 96 Prog 1. Checking against MVS-Scans, this tells me preeeettty clearly I have a boot KOF96 :ROFLMAO: especially since the MVS scans image doesn't even show a chip in the top right of the board.

Im not certain on this KOF97 though. The biggest difference I see on this Prog 1 board is the two chips on the right are labeled Toshiba, but what concerns me is that "Legend Trading Company" stamp that's also found on my KOF96 boot.

And my KOF 98 doesn't seem TOO out of sorts, but that gunk up there makes me second guess, along with the Toshiba branding on the chips rather than Sharp like on MVS scans.

Not certain, Id not recalled it until pulling these carts apart. Was gonna try to sell them since I have that AIO cart now but it prob just wont be worth the effort if they are boots.

All of those look original to me. Not sure what the extra Capcom Eprom is in 96 though? I was thinking a boss hack-thing of some kind but normally they are ICs soldered to the back of one of the P ROMs.

I suppose that's good to hear. Still weirded out by that capcom sticker.

All three carts are legit. SNK boards, real Toshiba/Sharp mask ROM chips. Case closed.

The KOF96 cart with the "CAPCOM" chip is probably a boss hack, cart is still legit though.

Thanks for the help fellas. I guess I need to look at my 96 a little closer.

Edit: So I booted the cart, as well as the game in the all in one - I believe by default Mr Big, Krauser and Geese are selectable regardless. Using the UniBIOS, I can unlock Geonitz and Chizuru. Same thing with the actual cart. So Im not sure what other hack might be on it. I dont have time to put some play time into it but I'll see if there are any weird things later. Good to know they are legit carts tho.

What does the unibios's crc check say? Almost all rom hacks with show "NG" on this screen.

I own two of those Rainbow Edition '96 hacks, both of which are legit but with an additional aftermarket chip added. The main difference is Geonitz and Chizuru are immediately selectable (normally unavailable in MVS mode) and have a 1 hit instant-fill super meter.

If yours doesn't have those two things then I'd say it's probably just a repair job.

Dude. Kern, come on man. Tell me you know the title wasn't meant to be taken seriously.
Haha, okay but did you really think any of these carts were boots? You've got Toshiba chips and numbered mask roms here with all the normal markings.

I matched them against MVS scans, and they didnt look the same so I wanted to make sure. And honestly the capcom sticker that doesnt belong there (along with the chip itself) made me think the same. My 94 is perfect, and I havent opened my 95 because it still has the SNK silver seal on the side and it hasn't been sliced.

But these three I wasn't sure of. 98 looks good enough but that bodge up there in the right, I assumed it might be a reflow, but a terrible one at that, so I wasn't sure.

If you thought there was any chance these are boots, you should learn more authenticating these. Too many supposed how-to's tell you to check against the scans and stop there. I agree it's funny that someone put a Capcom sticker there, but there's no chance any of these are boots considering the other chips you've got there.

Ran the CRC check and got this with the cart:

96_crc.jpg

So obviously definitely a ROM hack. But...

So now Im more confused after testing. I did notice that the game had the 1 hit super meter so there's that. But even though I could have sworn I got it to work last time on this cart, Chizuru/Geonitz would not appear unless I put the BIOS in AES mode. Tried enabling the cheat during the Neo boot up sequence, before coining up, booting normally, soft rebooting and trying to activate the cheat, and nothing. They would not appear unless in AES mode.

With the AIO cart I have, enabling the cheat anywhere before hitting start (in MVS mode) would unlock the two bosses.

I mean it's clear to me now that I have a ROM hack and not a boot (thx to all for the help), its just weird how its acting.

If you're really curious, I think figuring out the rom hack would be doable. It'd probably be a ripe pain though. Basically collect every kof96 rom hack you can find, and find the one who's prog rom has that matching crc.

Sadly kof rom hacks are just scattered all over the internet.

Interestingly enough, I used to have another MVS KOF96 like 15 years ago, and I remember it having an instant super meter as well. I wonder if I got my old cart back :ROFLMAO:
