The niece of a 92-year-old woman shot to death by police said her aunt likely had reason to shoot three narcotics investigators as they stormed her house.

Police insisted the officers did everything right before entering the home Tuesday evening, despite suggestions from the woman's neighbors and relatives that it was a case of mistaken identity.

The woman, Kathryn Johnston, was the only resident in the house at the time and had lived there for about 17 years, Assistant Chief Alan Dreher said.

The officers had a legal warrant, "knocked and announced" before they forced open the door and were justified in shooting once fired upon, he said.

Sarah Dozier, the niece, told WAGA-TV that there were never drugs at the house. (Watch niece's fury at police shooting )

"My aunt was in good health. I'm sure she panicked when they kicked that door down," Dozier said. "There was no reason they had to go in there and shoot her down like a dog."

As the plainclothes Atlanta police officers approached the house about 7 p.m., a woman inside started shooting, striking each of them, said Officer Joe Cobb, a police spokesman.

One was hit in the arm, another in a thigh and the third in a shoulder. The officers were taken to a hospital for treatment, and all three were conscious and alert, police said.

The Rev. Markel Hutchins, a civil rights leader, said Johnston's family deserves an apology.

"Of the police brutality cases we've had, this is the most egregious because of the woman's age," Hutchins said.

Hutchins said he would try to meet with Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington and would also meet with lawyers.

What do you guys think of this? I am most interested in how the police made their entrance.

If you're going to go out, go out blastin'.

If I was 92, I might choose to try to jump Snake Canyon or something, rather than shoot it out with cops.

You read the story and they make it sound like she didn't start things, but let's be real for a second. Cops kick in a door, and she had time enough to go for a gun AND get the drop on 3 of them before they signed her off?! She was ready for something, that's for dang sure. She was probably waiting to blast her no-good niece when she got home, and the unfortunate cops just happened to wander into the danger zone.

I'm impressed she shot all three of them!

The key part of the story is that they were plainclothes officers --that would be alarming to see them break in even if they claimed to be police. I wonder if they were trying to talk her down as she was shooting them?

The story is more amusing that it should be.

As stated, they announced they had a warrant, she didn't let them in. They let themselves in, she opened fire on them. At this point, the cops mowing her down was self defense on their part. Just because the trigger was being pulled by a 92 year doesn't mean those bullets are any different.

We have rights and rules we follow, as do the cops. Having a warrent gives the cops the right to enter your house. Without a warrant, they can't. It's really simple and all in all, fair for both sides since a judge has to be shown reasonable proof to issue a warrant. Judges know if they issue a warrant with too little proof for one, there's a chance in court the defense could argue that point and get it thrown out, thus removing any evidence/info collected during the search..blah blah blah

What I'm saying here is...anyone who thinks the cops were wrong here in this situation is a fucking idiot.

Considering her age, what if she had hearing problems or could not see the police badges? due to poor eye site? Probably she lived in a bad part of town where home invasions are a problem (hence granny toots a gun.) Can't blame the cops though... but I would guess that granny never had any idea that they were police.

(Checks thread...) No one here seems to think the cops were in the wrong, so you can rest easy.

Today's story was brought to you by the letter "G", as in "Granny's a G for having a shootout."

I'm an idiot....

The cops were wrong because they went to the wrong House... Fool.

If they did simple police procedure (staking out the place and verifying they had the right resident), this could have been avoided. Pitty that one of the dumbass plain cloathes gestapo didn't catch one in the temple.

A different viewpoint:

They were wrong to knock...

They should have busted the door down before she could get to a gun.

Suppreeme court now give you something like 8 seconds on a drug warrant?

If she had bad eye sight..... she got some deadly aim even at 92.

Awesome way to go out. The woman was 92 and probably ready to die anyways. I'd much rather die at an old age in a crazy shootout than wither away and die of some painful cancer or something.

Well, she went from dying quietly to dying with a lot more people knowing who she was...

While she might have been something normal IRL, like a civil servant or homemaker --She went out like a g.d./o.g. Panther.

More power to her for trying to take some other people out with her. But seriously... a 92 year old woman can get her gun out and shoot before young / middle aged cops can stop her? Congratulations, Atlanta Police Department, for being ready for anything.

Can't say I blame the police for firing back; I mean, when you're being shot at, you don't have much time to care about shooting at non-lethal points.
A shame, nonetheless.

Yeah, I've heard about shit like this happening before. Each time they go to the wrong house, and they end up killing the home owner.

You can't shoot at non leathal points in most departments.

You can only use lethal force (gun) to kill....
