I just remember the old pizza place that has a 60-in-1 game in a Donkey Kong cabinet. 1943 Kai should be on it I might have to go play it and show you a real 1943 master at work...er...a...play. It's the same place that has a old, beat up Neo-Geo 2 slot gold cabinet. They had Baseball Stars 2 and Football Frenzy in it so I gave them my Metal Slug 2 and Bust A Move that were collecting dust in my closet. Bust A Move apparently was dead but Metal worked and they said it made 10x more money in the first week they put it in the cabinet.

Good news: they have 1943 Kai on their 60-in-1 cabinet.
Bad news: using a Donkey Kong cabinet for it, they never changed the joystick on it, thus try playing the game with a FOUR WAY shrimpy Nintento joystick! That makes it a wee bit hard to play 1942, 1943, !943 Kai, Time Pilot, etc. not to mention the up motion wasn't as responsive as it should be so no attempt was made. Told the owner he needs to put a real stick on the game and that if he didn't have one, I'd happily donate him one. He'll let me know.

Fun fact, Kaisen means “Improvement” in Japanese. And this game is definitely an improvement over vanilla 1943.
I’ve been thinking about this while I play it, as I had probably played max 5 credits of it before this month. I have played the original extensively.

There’s some good and bad I think. The music is a big improvement and suits the mood of the updated version well.

I really hate the orange background.

The weapon variety is nice in that more than a single shot type is usable at all, but instead of 1 it’s 2 really. So not the biggest difference.

It is definitely cool to be able to pick up the side planes wherever you like.

The shorter game length (10 stages vs. 16) is welcome if you’re playing for high score. But the game is relatively easy compared to the original, so it just ends up feeling kind of short I think.

It seems to be easier to get the Mobichan bonus in Kai, but that might be coincidental.

All in all I think it’s a coinflip between the two for me.

Got a little further on the PCE and then also tried out the Saturn version. Even though they are both console I don’t know if they score the same.
The Sat power ups seem to drop down a lot quicker which makes it harder to juggle. Also, after a level it tallies up your bonuses, maybe the PCE does it automatically behind the scenes?

I seriously doubt I'm going to better my score before the end of the month.... stage 6 keeps owning me
