Fun fact, Kaisen means “Improvement” in Japanese. And this game is definitely an improvement over vanilla 1943.
I’ve been thinking about this while I play it, as I had probably played max 5 credits of it before this month. I have played the original extensively.
There’s some good and bad I think. The music is a big improvement and suits the mood of the updated version well.
I really hate the orange background.
The weapon variety is nice in that more than a single shot type is usable at all, but instead of 1 it’s 2 really. So not the biggest difference.
It is definitely cool to be able to pick up the side planes wherever you like.
The shorter game length (10 stages vs. 16) is welcome if you’re playing for high score. But the game is relatively easy compared to the original, so it just ends up feeling kind of short I think.
It seems to be easier to get the Mobichan bonus in Kai, but that might be coincidental.
All in all I think it’s a coinflip between the two for me.
