alright, so i'm out mountain biking with two friends of mine last wednesday afternoon/early evening. we've got some decent trails around the area, so i try to get out on them often. this time however, i probably should have considered staying home.

normally, i don't have any problems, but i suppose a big part of the fun is getting a little scraped up and having a story to tell afterward. hmmm...yeah.

we had already been riding for about an hour when we got to a fairly straight portion of the trail. heh, the 'straight' look was deceiving. we had been descending and gaining a lot of speed, but there were pretty deep ruts all over the place. the guy in front of me heard my tires slipping (which happens from time to time but doesn't mean i've wrecked or anything like that). he got distracted by the sound and wound up getting knocked off of his bike. he was fine, though...on the other hand, i was too distracted by his wreck to realize how deep one of the ruts was (about two feet deep), and the front half of my bike went into the rut. the force from the drop pulled my back wheel off (mind you - i do not have a cheaply made/put-together bike...hell, it gets tune-ups more often than my car) and sent me hurtling into a tree. i bounced off of the tree and started falling head first into a dirt and rock pile. in an effort to save myself from head injury, i twisted my upper body to allow my right shoulder to take the force from the fall.

okay, at the time, the fall didn't hurt as much as you'd think, and i'm stubborn (add a dash of pride). so the three of us put the bike back together, and i hopped back on.

heh, it seemed as though with each passing yard, it became harder and harder for me to hold myself on the bike with my right arm...we eventually made it back to the cars, and i realized there was NO way i could lift my bike. the guys put it in my car (where it still is).

the next day (after i don't know how many x-rays and a few different doctors' opinions), i found out that the fall caused a hairline fracture in one of the bones in my shoulder. thankfully, the doctor expects a 100% recovery, but i can't really say i regret it all that much. sure, i wish i could have avoided it, but i got hurt doing something i love to do. i was having a great time when it happened, and it didn't really affect my mood as much as it probably should have.

anyone else ever have experiences like that?

Wow, that could have ended badly, I'm glad you're ok.

As for me, when I was in boy scouts I was rappelling in WV when I slipped, fell ten feet onto a flat slab of rock, and bounced.

I got knocked out for a second, but I was completely fine, no concussion, no broken/bruised/sprained anything.

I was one lucky sprite I was.

Falling sucks. I hate that moment when you are in midair looking down at impending doom racing up to meet you. I am glad you are going to be fine.

I had a bad fall last week, though it did not occur as the result of an adventurous day in the wild. Instead I was wearing thick socks on my stairs, slipped and tumbled to the tiled floor below. Completely wrenched my knee. Spent a day in bed. Pathetic, I know. I like your story better, a respectable injury! ;)

That was nothing tbh.

I´ve popped a knee, broken a leg, busted some ribs & snapped a collarbone as a kid.

We used to get into all sorts of stupid stuff like a competition on who dares to cycle fastest to a wall using a shitty old bike we had dug up somewhere :D

Well, we just hope that you are fine.

I shattered my ankle while playing hockey, but I definitely noticed that and I couldn't even walk.

Glad you are OK.

My favorite trail in the Dallas area is the one in Grapevine near the lake, i've been on that one a few times. It certainly has some rough spots on it.

In high school this kid went four-wheeling stoned. Went off a hill or something and thought he was going to hit a tree so he jumped off the side but the 4 wheeler missed the tree. He jumped right into it. Severe head trauma. He was messed up for a while.

I was hit by a car while out rollerblading about 2 months ago.

Came out with only a broken wrist, but never got the person who hit me.:very_ang:

My uncle once tried to give every one a lesson on how to properly take a bike over a ramp....

He hit a tree and broke his collar bone....

Funny Shit.

i once got hit by a van when i was a kid walking home from school. fucker hit me going like 40 didn't even see me out there. i bounced away, got checked out, nothing wrong.

once hit a traffic light pole in my friend's old ford escort. he was trying to take a turn at like 70 miles an hour. most cars out there can't do that, let alone an escort. needless to say we slid and hit and nearly died. both walked away scratchless

and soon i'm going to sign up for wrestling school and learn how to get hit again.. shit's gonna be awesome.

Never done anything like that as an adult, but as a kid hell yes. Glad you're ok. Also, is it just me or is 2' deep a little more than a rut when you're biking?

My friend and I accidentally headbutted at a club Monday night.
Not nearly as exciting as Melch's story but doubly stupid.
They were playing Rob Base's "It Takes Two" and we were both very drunk.

My head still hurts.

Wow!!..Glad your Ok..

Sounds somewhat similar to a crash I had Mini GP Racing..
At http://www.sandyhookspeedway.com/

The force from the crash into the in side of the fast banked turn pulled my back wheel off the ground and over the bike around 40mph,Faceplanting me into the ground/track..
Leather saved me but I had some bad scrapes and burns...I saw stars but got back up and finished the race.

....
Me T boning another Racer-flipping over both bikes..

The sound is not matched up right to the video though..

Wow, glad to hear you're ok melchia. Just be thankful that you didn't sustain any connective tissue damage, that's much worse than breaking a bone.

Trust me. :crying:

I'm glad to hear you didn't get hurt too badly, melchia. One time my brother almost wrecked his nice Cannondale mountain bike doing almost the same thing.

If it'll cheer you up any, here's an old video of me accidentally falling off a 12-foot drop at a local park, dressed as a wizard. We were filming some dorky fighting movie ages ago, and I was wearing this big Greek helmet that obscured my peripheral vision. As a result, I didn't quite notice the oncoming cliffside... :D

cannondale? any idea what model?

mine is a specialized hardrock pro disc...will be taken to the shop to be completely readjusted (since it's still salvageable). when i first got into mtn biking, i didn't realize just how expensive some of these bikes are. funny thing is that i totally feel like they're worth it.

actually, it has to do with more lighter bikes and better gear (i.e. disc brakes, suspension, etc.) ;)
