alright, so i'm out mountain biking with two friends of mine last wednesday afternoon/early evening. we've got some decent trails around the area, so i try to get out on them often. this time however, i probably should have considered staying home.
normally, i don't have any problems, but i suppose a big part of the fun is getting a little scraped up and having a story to tell afterward. hmmm...yeah.
we had already been riding for about an hour when we got to a fairly straight portion of the trail. heh, the 'straight' look was deceiving. we had been descending and gaining a lot of speed, but there were pretty deep ruts all over the place. the guy in front of me heard my tires slipping (which happens from time to time but doesn't mean i've wrecked or anything like that). he got distracted by the sound and wound up getting knocked off of his bike. he was fine, though...on the other hand, i was too distracted by his wreck to realize how deep one of the ruts was (about two feet deep), and the front half of my bike went into the rut. the force from the drop pulled my back wheel off (mind you - i do not have a cheaply made/put-together bike...hell, it gets tune-ups more often than my car) and sent me hurtling into a tree. i bounced off of the tree and started falling head first into a dirt and rock pile. in an effort to save myself from head injury, i twisted my upper body to allow my right shoulder to take the force from the fall.
okay, at the time, the fall didn't hurt as much as you'd think, and i'm stubborn (add a dash of pride). so the three of us put the bike back together, and i hopped back on.
heh, it seemed as though with each passing yard, it became harder and harder for me to hold myself on the bike with my right arm...we eventually made it back to the cars, and i realized there was NO way i could lift my bike. the guys put it in my car (where it still is).
the next day (after i don't know how many x-rays and a few different doctors' opinions), i found out that the fall caused a hairline fracture in one of the bones in my shoulder. thankfully, the doctor expects a 100% recovery, but i can't really say i regret it all that much. sure, i wish i could have avoided it, but i got hurt doing something i love to do. i was having a great time when it happened, and it didn't really affect my mood as much as it probably should have.
anyone else ever have experiences like that?
