The Lakers don't want a coach that will establish a method while Lebron is there. He is the one running that team on the floor, as shitty as he is at it, and he can openly defy any decision he doesn't agree with.
Lebron needs a coach that helped him elevate his game and who he respects enough to listen.
Remember when Mike was pissed off about losing Doug Collins? Phil came in and established himself as someone worth listening to. Also, Mike was still emerging at the time Phil got there. He still wasn't considered the alpha dog in the league at that time. Just a lethal scorer.
The Lakers don't need a mastermind. They need a babysitter. Someone that will have the authority to put the players in their place and the backing of the organization. Lebron has had his way too long, been allowed too many liberties and hasn't been punished or reprimanded (so far as we know) for any of the stupid shit he's said and done over the years.
He believes he is bigger than the game and has absolutely no humility at all. Who wants to take that on?
That is why Mazulla was able to work with the Celtics. The right mix of talent and coaches. It's really lightning in a bottle. That kind of chemistry and potential realized is not easy to come by.
