Rome's Pizza
(nice atmosphere and their Greek Dolmas are to die for)
Blue Cactus Cafe
(Go at night when live music is playing)
Fujiya Japanese Restaurant
(really the only Nippon Eatery I'll eat in SATX. *Awesome!)
McBee's Bar-B-Q
(it's actually in New Braunfels TX, but technically it's in SATX since,
it's like 30 minutes outside of SATX on the way to Austin up I-35,
it's worth the trip)
However, on the Bar-B-Q front and if you don't want to drive to
McBee's... then hit up:
Rudy's Bar-B-Q
(good eats, strong Barbecue sauce)
Sam's Burger Joint!
(local fixture for all kinds of music and great burgers!)
Lorenzo's Ristorante
(kick ass Italiano, small, cozy and just great food. If you want
their awesome "Brascolie" ---Bru-Joh--- you'd have to be on a
waiting list as they do it proper and once a month)
Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
(a location other than in Austin. Great movie plex with
beer, cool stuff, eccentric flicks and Japanimation, you
name it. Their food is actually worth the rather high prices)
For Mexican food, I'll just say this. Forget about hitting up the usual chain places like Taco Cabana, Taco Bueno and shit like that. You want to find nice hole-in-the-wall mom & pop eateries. Most of them are going to be called "Taqueria Jalisco ______ something or other". You'd swear every Mexican was from the state of Jalisco, but that's what's out there.
That's all that comes to mind right now though. I'm sure there's great places all over the downtown River Walk area, but I rarely go down there as it's obnoxious as fuck, and if a native... really a waste of time, but then a good deal of the natives here are lushes and just live to drink, drink, and drink, so they'll probably be there too.
...oh and while this has nothing to do with "food", if you play your cards right and come on during the up coming month of May [the 17th to be exact], you can check out the
Alamo City Roller Girls, and watch scantily clad chicks roller skate and beat the hell out of each other. Though I'll admit, the TX Roller Girls up in Austin have a bigger roller rink and are seriously more rowdy, so a trip up there might not be so bad. If you go to Austin, make sure to hit up the following eatries...
-----------------------
AUSTIN EATS
-----------------------
Home Slice Pizza
(fucking awesome, had some for the first time yesterday
night. Located in SoCo ---South Congress street--- near a
bunch of other stores and eateries)
Conan's Pizza!
(and go to the one I've directed to you, their first location
near the UT Campus. Frank Frazetta artwork everywhere,
good pizza... and a Neo-Geo 2-Slot Cab)
Juan In a Million
(Good eats, but long lines usually. I mean wrap around
the building lines to get in sometimes, yesterday was insane!)
Short Stop
(link to various locations for this drive thu and go
burger place. It's not dancing in the streets but good
greasy burger goodness. Hadn't had one since 1988
when the SATX location closed down, but I had me one
yesterday when a homie and I hit up Austin and Eore's
Birthday Party, which is a local Hippie Festival)
OVERALL I HOPE THIS LISTING HELPS YOU A BIT.
