Atlantis kicks ass! I just finished viewing this animated masterpiece and I must say that I am impressed! It cleary reminded me of how much better Disney animation is to all that jap stuff. The story line was well scripted and very funny. The animation was so good it will take your breath away and leave you begging for more.
It took a team of animators just over three years to draw just one of the action sequences.
Now don't get me wrong I still enjoy watching Dragon Ball Z, Ninja Scroll, Fist of the North Star, Vampire Hunter D, Bio Hunter, and the Street Fighter and Dark Stalker series. But Disney has truly pounded into my head who is the king of animation.
I'm sure that this forum is teeming with lots of "hardcore" (ha,ha,ha) anime queers who won't allow themselves to watch this film because it would violate their "harcore code" . Those people are almost as annoying as the group of butt fucks who listen to punk rock and look down on anyone who just happens to like some mainstream music. All those people can suck me dry! Fuck em!
Anyways, if your into animation of any type you owe it to yourself to see Atlantis. That is if you want to see the best animation has to offer. If your willing to settle for that second rate bullshit than just keep watching reruns of Gundam Wing! Ha Ha Ha Ha!
And above all just keep in mind that these are the rantings of a complete fucking moron. None of what I have said should be taken in any kind of seriousness whatsoever.

From what I've seen about this movie, it looks like it's definitely gonna be worth sitting through. Thing is though, for personal reasons, I have made a conscious decision not to have a single penny of my money go to Disney, so if and when I see this, it's gonna be because somebody bought it on tape or DVD and I borrow it from them.

I'm a huge fan of animation though, I can find good in all kinds of animated movies, not just the Japanese ones, though they've made some of the very best animated movies oout there. If you like interesting art, there has been a reissue of the 197x movie "Fantastic Planet", but this time letter-boxed, and left in French with English subtitles. This movie is awesome, in my humble opinion, and worth a serious watching. Go rent it! You'll enjoy every "otherworldly" minute of it...

One movie I was hoping would get better attention than it did was Titan A.E. You talk about gorgeous art, and an excellent story, this movie delivered. I think Don Bluth and his productions can hold their own anyday of the week against the overhyped shit Disney cranks out.

What are you talking about?!
I love Titan AE! I can't believe that it flopped at the box office, I read somewhere that Fox Animation studios got shut down because of it's failure.
Titan AE remains one the the best reference DVD's out there. I always use this disc whenever I'm showcasing my home theater, in DTS of course.
I'll have to pick up Fantastic Planet, it sounds pretty cool.
I say support all kinds of animation!

Definitely planning on seeing Atlantis, and I loved Titan A.E. The soundtrack was great, too! I do not require that animation be Japanese, Disney, or have some other specific origin for me to enjoy it. Now if only they would release Mighty OrBots on DVD, I would be a happy Unitron! <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

I'm about as hardcore as they come, but even I enjoy non-japanese animation. Tex Avery was a comedy genius. I don't really like disney, since they seem to get their ideas by borrowing them from other films. Namley, Kimba the White Lion, and now Nadia:The Secret of Blue Water. Watch Atlantis and then Blue Water and you'll get it. Didn't they steal that giant A from Stargate?

I saw Atlantis yesterday.

Wait...let me rephrase that: I saw *most* of Atlantis yesterday.

Here's what happened:

The movie is playing on two screens. My friends and I pay the admission and proceed to the nearest screen. We sit in the theater for quite a while; I check my watch and find out the movie should have started playing about 15 minutes ago. There's at least 20 other people not including us in the same screen room.

I go to the desk and ask the receptionist what's up. She tells me NOW that the film's playing in the OTHER screen. She never said a **** THING about this until AFTER I asked.

So the whole lot of us had to go to the other room, missing the first 15 minutes of the movie. Bah! Hulk SMASH! <IMG SRC="smilies/ohno.gif" border="0">

*ahem* This movie is so beautiful. The character designs rock! The story isn't afraid to surprise you, and there are *gasps* NO RANDOM SONGS! That's gotta be a first for Disney animated movies! If you're a hand-drawn animation enthusiast like me, you owe it to yourself to see this. Just stunning. Stunning, I tells ya!

Amen to that! You talk about animation that was way ahead of it's time, it definitely has to be The Orbots. I've snagged a few of the old tapes of this off of e-bay for reasonable prices, but if this got released on DVD, you'd have one happy Gojira as well!

While we're on the subject of animation, who here digs Ralph Bakshi? Forget about that basturdization of Fritz the Cat he's responsible for, I'm talking some of his good movies like American Pop, Coon Skin, and Fire and Ice.

Fire and Ice was your typical ho-hum wizards and swords and scantily clad girls bullshit, but it was kinda' cool getting to see Frank Frazetta character designs put on film. But if you really want to see some animation that pushes the envelope on subject matter, go and see Coon Skin (though I've seen the same movie released as Street Fight).

Get this, all of the good guy characters are black, yet drawn with the stereo-typical ink-black skin, huge pink lips, and really jive talking voices. 90% of the white characters are gay, and drawn in very derogatory ways with lipstick, hot pants, and effeminate voices. The other 10% of the white characters are evil basturds with no redeeming qualities, and are usually racist. This movie, simply put, sets out to piss off everybody equally, and yet the story is actually pretty good, with a little live action thrown into the mix. It's got the voice talents of and also stars Scatman Crothers, Barry White, and Phillip Michael Thomas too. For something that is really off the beaten path, check this movie out! Just be careful who you watch it around... <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

I saw this movie last night.

Now, nomally I HATE hate hate Disney films. In fact, the last one I saw was 'Alladin', that is, until now.

Man this was a good film. In fact, if I just saw it without knowing it was disney, I would NEVER have thought it could have come from them.

This is an adventure film! No singing, no talking animals, no morals-that-really-aren't-morals bullshit....

Many people die in this film.

There is NO whacked out "Message" here.

The characters are cool, well thought out and beleivable.

The design and look of this film is truly awe-inspiring. Seriously, I aint kiddin'.

The Submarines, the vehicles and pretty much everything else look really cool, I would even go so far as to say this some of the best design work I have ever seen in an animated film.

Man I really liked it.

I don't know HOW disney produced this film. It makes no sense. But they did.

Damn.

Titan A.E. was almost epic in scale and they should have done at least a 2 part movie instead of squashing it all in 1 movie. Are there still those idiotic sidekicks in Disney flicks these days? I sure hope not because Atlantis has a great premise and some real neat artwork.

I kind of interpreted the supporting cast of Atlantis in the same way I did all other supporting casts in Disney flicks: that is, jabbering, yammering characters that annoy me with their ceaseless prattle.

Atlantis had its share of amusing but ultimately useless characters (the cook, the decrepit smoking hag, the latina mechanic, the mole...God I hated the mole). However, I liked the demolitions expert, voiced by the man who plays Father Guido Sarducci. His delivery was SPOT ON: "Milo, you-a got-a anythin' a more-a sporty, like-a maybe a tuna?" LOL! Nimoy was awesome as the old king of Atlantis, too. Truly a great performance.

This movie could have benefitted from some slowing down of the storyline (I felt like there was too much going on) and the elimination of the unnecessary characters (the jokes they said could have been delivered through other means), but overall I'd probably give the film a nod. I was probably more scrutinizing about it than your average movie goer so I walked away without a real impression.

However, that's not a bad review. Most of the people I know loved this movie, so maybe it's just me. There were things I saw in this movie that weren't in any other Disney flicks, which was encouraging: people smoking, death, blood, violence, no singing. It's a good first step for Disney to make. I just hope the audience is out there for it.

I also thought Titan A.E. was a better American effort as a sci-fi/adventure film. But I applaud Disney for giving it a shot, and encourage them to continue with this sort of thing. It's a good sign.

Now, I'm not a very big fan of anime, and I'm even less of a fan of Disney... I've never even seen Nadia because it hasn't been released here... But this sounds pretty fucking shameless if you ask me.

Edit: Oh yeah, I haven't seen Atlantis either, and I don't plan on ever doing so.

I really wish Gainax would file some sort of litigation against disney. It really is shameless what they did. I read the transcript of the confrence on animenewsnetwork, and they acted like they had never even heard of japanese animaton. The House of Mouse used to put out alot of quality programming and animation, but without a disney running it, or even someone who cares about something besides profit, it results in something like this happening.

Check out the pic that was linked at the bottom! Hah! http://ironmouse.dhs.org/dragon/nadia/003/012000.html

Isn't that the same way Disney acted when confronted over the similarites in The Lion King to Kimba the White Lion? <IMG SRC="smilies/ohno.gif" border="0"> If I remember right, the spokepeople for Disney flat out denied any of the similarities, but when some of the animators were interviewed one on one, they told different stories. Sad, straight up fuckin' sad.

This makes me think that they should change their name from Disney to Dakis, considering how many times he's stolen news from other sources and tried to convince everybody (and quite unsuccessfully I might add) that he was first. And the real ass-kicker with Disney is that with all their billions of dollars these Disney-Freaks are shoving into their pockets buying all the gawddamn merchandise and every single release on video/DVD that comes out, you'd think they could actually hire writers! Or another real ass-kicker is trying to tell this to a Disney-Freak. I really liked the lame-o arguments I got over the Lion King. "It's not Kimba, it's a play on Romeo and Juliette!" I shit you not, I actually had this dumbass girl try to push that one on me. Oh well, at least those capitalist-fucks won't get a penny out of me. And like I said before...

Whoa, guys...

I AGREE that Disney is the closest thing we have to the physical embodiment of evil on Earth, but please don't let this film fall into the cracks...

...Because Disney WILL forget this film!

In fact, people will be FIRED at Disney for this film's lackluster performance.

They took a risk, that the IDIOTIC, SLACK-JAWED, RETARDED American public would chose "Atlantis" over the awful Piece 'O Crap "Tomb Raider"...

Disney will forget the cool, adventure film format forever now...

If there was any justice, Angelina "Fuck-Me-Hard" Jolie would drop dead NOW.

This is a really good movie guys, the best animated film since Mononoke... I mean it, it has really fired my imagination.

Then again, "Blade Runner" was a big flop too.....

But see, the thing is, it's not a good movie... I don't even need to see it to know it's not a good movie. If everything on those sites is true, then it's just blatant thievery... Plain and simple, and I don't need to see the movie to know that, I just need to see those pictures. That's good that it fired your imagination, but at least look to the source... Nadia is going to be released here pretty soon, I think it's safe to say that a 30 something episode TV series is going to fire your imagination a lot more than a 1.5 hour kids movie did.

Yes, Blade Runner did do badly, but at least it was original. I don't like that movie too much either, but I know it's original, and there's no excuse for the idiotic Americans to have loved Star Wars so much but hate that movie... Atlantis on the other hand is not original, so I have no sympathy for it. I hope this teaches Disney a lesson to go crawl back into kiddie movie hell, where whatever movies they make won't even pique my interest before I find out how unoriginal they are.

I don't respect thievery in movies. There is no excuse for stealing complete character ideas and plotlines, it's just unoriginality. There is no way around that in mainstream Hollywood because the people are too damn stupid to realize they shouldn't be making movies, and that's why it sucks so much. Since everything has been done before, the only way around unoriginality is to take the idea and build upon it, and at least give a nod to the source material, like with Swingers. It knew it was biting off of Tarantino's dialogue style, so it admitted it and went on with what it had to say that Tarantino didn't. That's not the best comparison for cartoons ripping off of each other, but I don't watch many cartoons, and this is probably one of the reasons why...

Kiss my ass, Hollywood.

Well STAR WARS, for example, completely ripped of an Akira Kurasawa film- "The Hidden Fortress". The R2D2 and C3PO characters were taken almost directly from that film, not to mention much of the theme and plot as well.

And oddly enough (Since you use it as your sig...) Reservoir Dogs is not completely original either. It rips of the HK film "City on Fire".

Well I think it's safe to say that your observation here is about as insightful as an episode of 30 something, or better yet, Walker: Texas Ranger. <IMG SRC="smilies/loco.gif" border="0">

oh no!

Pretentious film student alert!

God... Am I glad those were the first people weeded out at USC 'movie' School! <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

Technically, if we're talking originality, I think just about every movie out has pirates some piece of Greek tragedy -so that makes everything unoriginal and hence, retarded...

Finally saw it. I was a bit disappointed, though. I thought they rushed through the story too much, and did not develop the characters enough. The artistic styling was good, IMO, as was the initial concept. They just should have done more with it.

Now I want to track down the anime that it supposedly rips off and watch that.
