Your essential AES/MVS/CD collection, what would it include?

I'm going to do it a little differently based upon some recent discussions on here. Here is how I think a "new guy" would be getting the most bang for the buck of the best titles by mixing and matching across all platforms:

NEO AES:
Baseball Stars 2
Fatal Fury Special
King of Fighters 98
Magician Lord
Samurai Spirits 2

NEO CD:
Big Tournament Golf
Metal Slug 1 and 2
Pulstar
Windjammers

NEO MVS:
Blazing Star
Bust A Move
Garou: Mark of the Wolves
Last Blade 2
Magical Drop 3
Metal Slug X
Metal Slug 3
Shock Troopers

That's a lineup that shouldn't break the bank too bad but pretty much can keep you busy forever with great titles.

The list sounds great but what about the cost of the hardware? Would you envisage the "new guy" buying 3 separate machines?

Yes, but compared to the carts the hardware cost is almost negligible.

I wish I had an MVS Baseball Stars 2 copy I could put in that pic.
Those are certainly my most played Neo games ever.

What do you mean? The Rarez? I don't care about the rarez, what's essential about the Neo is the games, the rest is just a matter of preference but I don't find it essential in the least. My main concern is the peripherals, the video and the audio, I want it to play, sound and look great, no compromises. Emulation comes second, I love it too but in a different way, never to replace the top option but always there for practice, experimenting, portability, accessibility and so on...

No, not at all -- although with teh Neo, almost everything seems rare. I thought about games like Andro Dunos, League Bowling, Riding Hero, Ashita no Joe, KotM, Power Spikes, Savage Reign, Stakes Winner, Neo Mr. Do, Captain Tomaday... & many more. Games you'd consider the anti-hits, less to not known, living on or even off Neo Geo's margin. Games I'd consider essential to any decent collection to lighten up all the dead serious box-office, because they seem so out of place on this particular system. Not all of them, but at least one out of that dirty dozen.

As to peripherals, they are of course top priority. I can't play with lag, no matter how small (see XRGB, can't stand it), I need a good quality controller & the best video signal available on a particular system. As audio goes, good speakers or headphones, but I may be less strickt here. But since you probably play cabs, you already have everything tied together in a nice package anyway, so I'll save my breath.

I've been trimming my collection my whole life, to what I think are the best. This is pretty much my collection, except a couple I have not yet obtained. I think it still needs trimmed a bit, but it's really hard to choose the best out of the Real Bouts, and KOF series. I am an odd man out, in that I am not fond of Fatal Fury Special, but love the series starting with the Real Bouts. I still need to get the best KOF games later in the series, but 98 is easily the best by far in my opinion.

Metal Slug
Metal Slug X
Metal Slug 3
Matrimilee
Ninja Masters
Pulstar
Blazing Star
KOF 96
KOF 98
Fatal Fury 3
Real Bout 2
Real Bout Special
Waku Waku 7
Magical Drop 3
Samurai Shodown 2
Samurai Shodown 3
Samurai Shodown 4
Art of Fighting
Art of Fighting 3
Last blade
Last Blade 2
Mark of the Wolves
Magician Lord
Shock Troopers
Neo Turf Masters
Miracle Adventure

That's 26 games. Not too bad really. I think it's very reasonable.

If you have friends to play with I would pick these up, they get boring fast alone.

Windjammers (must have with friends)
Twinkle Star Sprites
