You know what's better than a good deal? not having to make a deal.
It sounds like you are trying to manage potential savings and value. That's the whole point of these screaming deals. You are getting hit with marketing, and it's working.
It doesn't seem like there is anything wrong with your current truck. Get that loan paid off.

Give your current truck some TLC, and I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

Yeah...that's the way I'm leaning.

I'm trying to weigh things out. Trucks are a funny game. Used trucks are a total shit market, you can literally get a far better deal on new than in the 2-3 year used market. Getting a new truck for 20% off is a pretty solid deal.

More than likely, I'll just keep my '14.

Interested to know, do you think you could sell the current truck off in the used market and make a profit?

Definitely. Hell, just trading it in, I'd get $6-7000 more out of it than I owe on it.

Then again, "profit" is a loose term. I've paid on the thing for 3 years so I'm not actually making any money, just getting some back.

Does it work the same way for body on frame full size SUVs? I've started becoming intrigued by Suburbans, Expeditions since moving to an area with poor road quality.

Pay off the truck smoke.

I know I'm resident cheapass, but seriously, trading in cars every 3 years means you'll never own one of them, you'll be in a continual monthly payment cycle for an eternity.

I don't know much about the Ram as far as reliability, but modern cars and trucks are extraordinarily reliable. Maybe you'll need to learn to do a little bit of your own maintenance but honestly, even if you take it to the shop you'll come out ahead. People tend to view a couple thousand dollar repairs as a reason to get back into the payment cycle. Instead, think of the several thousand dollars that you were previously paying into a vehicle loan while the vehicle itself simultaneously loses value.

Just my opinion though.

Definitely pay off the truck and keep it. Is the '17 that much better than the '14? Doubt it. Your wallet would be happy.

Weather looked nice today, so i spent a good 6 hours doing the exterior. I went to my mom's place for some peace and quiet while i worked.

Dish Soap to wash off last year's wax and sealant, then new layers of sealant and wax. I only had time to let them sit for about an hour before buffing.

I didn't even get to touch the interior yet. Plus my arms are killing me.

997? Boss wheels.

Got a 996 C4S with another pain in the arse story attached, will bosh up a picture and short history soon.

Edit, found a couple:

So, I picked this up at a repo auction. The bodywork was a bit scruffy but nothing too bad so I thought I'd take a punt on it.

Picked her up and I was in a good mood, started first time, no smoking, smooth through the gears (auto), interior in fantastic shape and a good spec model with loads of extras (electric seats, old school car phone, porsche embossed leather etc etc). It only had a valet key with it, no remote key, but I figured I could resolve this sometime in future.

I took it straight to my mechanic and although it needed a few bits doing (top mounts, pads, discs, that kind of thing) it was minimal really. Annoyingly the rear spoiler wasn't working though.

I thought about this a while and found a replacement spoiler mech from a breaker yard for a couple of hundred to picked that up, gave it to my mechanic who fitted it, still no play. He reckoned it might just need initialising with proper porsche software so I took it into a local specialist.

4 hours worth of diagnostics later, it's a problem with the instrument cluster. Replacement from porsche, 」2.5k.... I searched high and low and found a second hand part for 」269, a huge saving. It had a different mileage on it but I found a place that would do a mileage correction for 」60 (worryingly simple to do apparently).

Cluster arrives, swapped them over, now the fuel gauge doesn't work and the oil level warning is on despite it being full. Sent the cluster back and hunted down another one.

Next one arrived - bingo! Fires into life, a full day of spoiler joy, parked her up and life went on.

Couple of weeks later and the sun comes out, thought why not be a twat and put the roof down. Erm, roof not working. I knew straight away what it would be, and I was right. The second hand instrument cluster came off a coupe, not a convertible.

Long story short I've now tracked down a guy who says he can clone the software from the original cluster and install it on the new cluster and bring the roof back to life, I'll be sorting that this week. It's not the end of the world, just fucking around as ever.

As for getting a remote key, porsche took one look at the engine ecu and said it had been changed at some point in the past so they have no idea what car it came off, so there's no way of finding out the codes to link a key to it.

After the various electrical issues I'm starting to think it was never a repo car in the first place, it was just a problem car thrown in to the auction by a guy who'd had enough of fucking around with it.

Still, drives like a beast, and I'm in the minority of really liking the styling on the 996 when they have the flared wheel arches, even the runny egg lights that a lot of people hated, so all's well that ends well I guess.

I'm in an interesting situation, fellas.

I bought my Ram 1500 new in Feb of 2014 (2014 model). I got a screaming deal on it (sticker'd at $39K, got it for $30K). With the equity I had in my 2009 Honda Accord, I landed up walking away with a very affordable loan on such an expensive vehicle.

At this point, my 3/36 bumper-bumper just expired, I'm still running on the 5/60 mechanical warranty. The truck has 24K miles on it and has been problem free. I'm WAY far ahead of the thing concerning how much I owe -vs- what its worth.

The dealership I bought the thing from is offering some screaming deals on new '17 Ram 1500 trucks, including the next package up from mine (mine is a "black edition" Ram express, they have deal on the "Big Horn" edition).

Typically, I'd shed the thing and get a new one...but this time I'm not so sure. Should I just keep the thing, or should I take the trade in? One thing that does worry me is that Ram is rolling out a new 1500 here soon and I guarantee that those $10K off deals won't be around for many years after that happens, it never is. They replaced the Town and country with the new Pacifica and that's the case with it. that thing is way more $$ for the same features my T&C came with just 1 year ago.

Those 10k oFF deals for Ram trucks will always be around. That's the way they do business. Every Saturday for the last 25 years or so, I get my Saturday edition newspaper, and every single week I see the discount advertised on the Rams trucks. Chevy and Ford run similar promotions, but the discounts are not as high as Dodge.

At least that is the way it works here in the Los Angeles area.
I'll try to post this week's offer tomorrow, because I left my newspaper in my car.

24kmiles on a Dodger truck is nothing, so your truck should serve you well for a long time.
Goodluck, with whatever you decide.

Only truck that seems to really retain its value year after year is a Toyota Tacoma.

Heavy duty trucks hold their value big time...light duty? They hold then drop sharply. 2-3 years old and they will retain quite a bit of value, once they get to the 10 year mark, they fall off the scale it seems.

HD trucks though? Wow. Look up a 10-15 year old 2500 series Dodge, or a F-250, or HD Chevy...they're still worth quite a bit.

Either way, I'm just going to keep the thing. No use trading it in.

I have developed a perverse liking for the styling of the bmw 5-series gt model, at first I thought it looked awful, but now:

Truth.

Also looking forward to another stevenk tale of fixing up a car. Not sure it'll top the Bentley though :)

I would have left the rear spoiler dead. At this age, it's going to be a little tired already. You certainly want that top working, but i can live with some broken electronics here and there.
996's are still a blast to drive. My boss has a 996 TT.

You want to make sure your non-Porsche mechanic has a P-durametric tool and software. And they need to know how to use it. It's not as difficult to find as the Mercedes STAR software.

So true regarding the heavy duty trucks, especially the diesel 4x4. I think they are reliable, and can go easily quarter million miles or more as long as it is taken care of and routine maintenance is done.

As for midsized/light duty trucks, Tacomas especially here in California, truly hold value.

https://www.kbb.com/new-cars/best-resale-value-awards/best-resale-mid-size-pickup-truck/

Above is an example, but just google, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

As for Rams, just looked at the Saturday classified section of the L.A. Times, and $12,000 off any remaining 2016, and 10k off 2017 regular, and quad cabs.

2017 chevy Silverado 1500 LT crew cabs are 13k off, with 44k original sticker price.

Good choice in not trading in your Ram, they are comfortable, and reliable. No need for having a new payment.

I know you drive a Ram, but what trucks styling do you like the most atm?

I think it's a toss up between the Ram and Chevy, but damn, the Ford Raptors always catch my attention.

I'm a Datsun/Nissan/Infiniti fan, but I'd never buy Frontier or Titan, think they try to hard to make them look tough and rugged.

I saw a Kia on the freeway, and swore it was a BMW.
Someone borrowed styling cues from the other company.

The pic below is a 2016 or 2017 k900 Kia

Let's not pretend asian automakers have any originality outside of japan.
Or asian engineers outside Jp.

that being said. I would probably be happy with a hyundai genesis sedan AWD.

Most of the offerings are pretty decent looking at the moment. Pure styling wise? I'll lay it down like this:

#1- Toyota Tundra- Love the new styling of this truck, my only gripe (minor) is the massive chrome front end. I don't like chrome on trucks. Other than that, I feel this is the best looking truck on the market.

#2- Nissan Titan- It's a bit "extreme" in a few aspects, but this is still one nice looking truck. In my mind, a solid second place.

#3- Chevy Silverado- I love the front ed now that they've dropped the chrome and went to body color. Seriously, nicest front end on any truck. The problem is, the rest of the body screams "old man truck" Plain, boring. Still a string 3d place. (the GMC version is ugly, BTW)

#4- Ford F-150- yay...let's completely redesign a truck...and make it look like the last one! I love Ford, I really do, but this truck is just boring to look at. To add to it, they are freaking costly.

#Z- Dodge 1500. This truck looks tired, and old. They've massaged a few thing here and there, but this truck has been around for way too long (2002 I believe). There is a redesign coming, but they just keep pushing it out farther and farther. meanwhile, their competition has had new vehicles out for years now.

Let's not pretend they have originality within Japan either. Aside from technical projects, and flagship models a lot of the basic white goods cars/people carriers get blended together.
