The King of Fighters series began in 1994, taking characters from the Fatal Fury series , the Art of Fighting series, Ikari Warriors, Athena, and the various sports games (3 Count Bout, Street Slam, Football Frenzy, along with some original characters. The series continued each year until KoF 2003, as it was the last KoF for the Neo-Geo home system. It has since transitioned to other arcade hardwares.
The major arcs in the KoF storyline include the Orochi and NESTS arcs.
