I recently got my hands on a Puzzled MVS bootleg

(sorry for the size)

I'd like to compare it to a genuine board - I'd appreciate it if anyone is willing to post or send me a scan of one. Thx.

Looks real enough to me....puzzled is a tiny game and quite frankly not worth bootlegging.

I agree Puzzled doesn't seem worth bootleging.

But the whole board-setup looks strange and there isn't a single SNK chip on it...

Anyone wanna open their genuine Puzzled?

Hey man that looks real to me, why do you think it is a bootleg? SNK does not always use SNK stamped chips... usually they use Toshiba, but I have seen chips similar to these in older carts such as Riding Hero and Nam and other oldies... My guess is this is 100% original.

-Nick

By the way, this looks almost identical to my new Zupapa cart that came straight from Apple! Except that has an EPROM on the second board for M1 You got a real cart man.

Your roms match the correct rom dump currently used in MAME:

C1
C2
M1
P1
S1
V1 (v11)
V2 (v21)

Seems fine to me.

Yeah I know - Toshiba or Sharp, but there's always at least one SNK chip on the board.

But thanks for your tip about the old carts -I actually never opend my old carts. You are right, NAM does look similar to it, there isn't a single SNK chip on it either. To be more precise, not a single chip has the manufacturer stated on it (no Toshiba etc). So I suppose your right - it is genuine.

Case closed - thanks to all.

Oak, th eother thing is, if someone bootlegs a cart, generally they use EPROMs and not PROM ships. The PROMs are more expensive and are not worth the additional expense when bootlegging in the first place.

not really. proms are in fact quite a bit cheaper than eproms, because the casing is much cheaper to manufacture (no need for the heavy one with a window, just a normal plastic casing). the only problem is that they seem to be hard to find.. I haven't had any luck at normal shops, I guess they sell proms only in large quantities.

As far as I know neo carts uses Mask ROMs, which can't be "garage burned"

You have to order a set directly to manufacturers such as Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba and so on, who does the mask to produce ROM directly on silicium. So they are manufactured, not programmed.

Anyway, EPROMs can be used for small titles, although pinout is different and require a small adaptator board for each ROM, which take all the room inside the cart quite quickly...

Back to topic, this puzzled is 100% original. Uses SNK boards and correctly labelled ROMs.
No SNK labelled chip because old boards doesn't use them yet, there's a bunch of 74LSxx instead of these...

SNK also uses proms in most of their carts.
look at the pics above.. the 27c4001s are standard proms.

there's plenty of bootlegs that are made by using an original board of a cheap cart and just replacing the proms with eproms.
I got a puzzle bobble here that uses 27c4000's for all of the roms, with exception of one 27c010 and a 27c100.. no adapters or anything, they were placed right into an original SNK board.
it appears most mask roms used (i.e. the 23c4001) are pin compatible to normal eproms (23c4001 is compatible to 27c040 from what I saw, 23c4000 to 27c400 etc).

[Edited to fix a mistake and add some info]

oh yeah, and the puzzled cart is definately original. my riding heroes uses the very same pcb and chip layout, with some extra hardware for the link connectors.

Speaking of which, has anyone ever setup Riding Hero in link mode? What kind of cable is needed? I have two Neo cabs, but only one Riding Hero cart. maybe I can try this sometime if I ever find another RH cart.

I think it's a 2x stereo headphone plug cable with crossed wires.. no idea about the pinout, tho.

I got a RH cart I might sell, btw.
