I thought it'd be nice to compare covers to originals and go ahead and post the ones you know of and what you think. I'll start with these two...

Careless Whisper

George Michael

Seether

I think I still like the original. The new version is nice...but it doesn't convey the 80s mood the original one set.

Here's mine.

Stripped

Depeche Mode: (live)

Rammstein (live)

I agree with you on that OMF, the newer one doesn't give off that feeling.

Well, I like Rammstein better....

@Kage. Jackson 5, definitely

Maralyn manson also has his version for Tainted Love. The last one right there with some guy singing a mariah carey song was rather....interesting lol.

I HATED the Seether cover of Careless Whisper. Everyone knows Dave Koz's cover was MUCH better.

The Jones Girls - Nights Over Egypt (1981)

Incognito - Nights Over Egypt

Winner: Jones Girls. Let's face it, Incognito is good but their version is to techno and the video really doesn't do a good job of describing what the song is about.

Roy Ayers - Everybody loves the sunshine.

Ramp - Everybody loves the sunshine

Winner: It's kinda hard to say. They're both good. Vocally it sounds the same but Roy Ayers version, in terms of beats, has more of a night time drive feeling to it that's comfortable.

I'll have more later! This is too fun! :D

Yes!

How 'bout this one?--"Smooth Criminal"
Original, by Michael Jackson
Cover, by Alien Ant Farm

(Using YouTube kinda sucks on this one. Ignore the video and just judge the music.)

"Blue Monday"
Original, by New Order
Cover, by Orgy

Truthfully, I like Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm. It practically sounds the same but with a strong guitar riff. It's noice!

Am I the same girl by Barbara Acklin

VS.

Swing Out Sister's version

Winner: VERY tough decision here. The original had the 60s feel while the SOS's version had that 90s feeling. It's a tough call but I gotta go with the original.

La la (means I love you) by the Delfonics

VS.

Jackson 5 version

VS

Swing Out Sister's version

Winner: I can't decide, you all have to do this one.

Wow, you put in the EXACT TWO that came to mind when I read this topic.

As far as Smooth Criminal, I like both equally, for different reasons. Both are great.

Now, Blue Monday... sure, without the original, you don't have the cover. BUT, I think that Orgy's version is vastly better. Always felt the New Order version sounded empty. Never liked it. But the cover, great.

This is probably the closest a cover can get to being better than the original. There just seems to be something more real about the original though, but in this case I can understand anyone thinking the cover is better.

Original - Nine Inch Nails - Hurt: Live

Cover - Johnny Cash - 'Hurt"

Some awesome links in this thread, though.

The Who

Limp Bizkit

Obviously the Who's version is the better one. I just don't understand why the Limp Bizkit version cut out the end of the song and replaced it with some dumbass chant.
