How important to you is a storyline in fighting games

A whole lot? Not much?

Personally I don't care a great deal, but it's nice to have a good storyline for the characters and what not.
To me though, a storyline will NOT make or break a fighting game.

All I care about is the fun factor.

Here is my opinion.
A story line to me is the most useful in RPG's if the story sucks, chances are you will lose interest (one of the main reasons FF8 lacked)
In fighting games to me its all about the gameplay the story is just another cherry on the pie, not of utmost importance, but it adds to the enjoyment.

Good thought, Steve!

My opinion on storys in fighters are that they are interesting to read, but are like extra credit. I own some import fighters that are in Japanese, and it doesn't detract too much from the game if I can't read the story and dialogue. It would be nice to know what's going on in some of them, though...

For me the fighters got to have realistic play mechanics, and MUST have a decent storyline. The above two things are what made games like Art Of Fighting 1, Fatal Fury 1,2 and Special so great.
As soon as Fatal Fury abandoned its storylines or just rehashed teh same crap about Geese, in my book the whole franchise went down the toilet.
As for games like ADK and Fatal Fury 3, women picking up 7 foot men, thats not realistic, and as for 20 hit combos, and you still cant knock out the foe, that simply sucks.
Thats what I liked about Art of fighting, the world heroes series,, Samurai Shodown 1-2, Kizuna Encounter, in those games every blow counted

I like a storyline.... but its not that important. I've got loads of import fighters anyway, and I don't really miss the story's.

Not too much though it does give it another element besides the game play to look forward to.

I think it is a nice touch but it isn't the most important thing if you ask me. If the fighter has a bad story line but the play rocks, then I am sure to buy it.

Story lines mean jack to me in a fighting game. Look at all the VS. games, no fcking story lines at all, and they still rule.

The original SF/SF2 also had pretty much 0 story line too.

Personally I like fighters with storylines because it gives the whole game more depth and value, and most of them are enjoyable. Stories are second to gameplay tho. If the gameplay sux, everything else sux, since I don't buy a history book on martial arts fighting styles but a video game.

I am no "reality freak" at all, and I don't think that it's reality what keeps one playing fighting games; ever tried to do some KoF (S)DMs for yourself? If you do: Don't forget to take a picture and post it here <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

Hey:

Well, considering the storyline of most fighters is "12 of the world's greatest fighters have been assembled to decide once and for all who is the strongest!!!", storylines in fighting games are pretty much a throwaway.

However, when a fighter comes along that is BASED on a storyline, like SoulCalibur, the story aspect really shines through.
