CPS3 Battery Replacement, Black Wire?

I have decided I would like to buy a Third Strike sooner rather then later, and know the first thing that I am going to have to do is replace the battery, unless of course I can verify that it was done prior to sale.

I have been reading up on the procedure to change the battery, and noticed some people mention soldering another ground wire from the daughter board so the infamous black wire can be removed from the battery's negative terminal. I was wondering if someone could post a pic of how they did this, I know I may get lucky and not have to even deal with this depending on the cart but would like to do this instead of trying to solder a wire to the battery and the old leg of the old battery, as is done in Raz's guide.

Thanks,

Dennis

MKL posted a pic about it. Try searching under his name.

you dont need to jump a ground on a 3rd strike cart....easiest way to change the battery

1. Open Cart
2. Plug into pcb and power the game
3. With game running (desolder old battery)
4. Resolder new battery
5. Pray
6. Turn off cab
7. Reassemble cart
8. Test one more time

only older carts like new gen, 2nd impact and such require a ground jump...Ive changed dozens of cps3 batteries and thats the best way to do it

So none of the Third Strike Carts have that ground wire on them, if that's the case then that makes me extremely happy as that is one less thing to worry about.

It will sort of work, before you begin those procedures you have to jump another ground on the cart or otherwise when you disconnect the battery it will kill the cart......i got a picture somewhere let me see if i can find it and post it for you

changing cps3 batteries is not for the faint of heart :)

just a note on this process, do not use a copper solder wick when the board is on cause it will conduct electricity and be bad if you touch any thing else.

It's an expensive and foolish mistake.

It's also very important that your iron be electrically isolated if you're going to do a battery swap with the security cart in the motherboard while it's powered.

Quite a lot of soldering irons are grounded, or the tip is wired to Neutral (which is wired to ground at some point).

Make sure your soldering iron tip is completely isolated from ground, or use an isolation transformer, or you're almost certain to fry your board.
