StealthLurker - any advice for me on starting to collect Japanese robot toys?

Thanks!
Hope you don't mind some unsolicited input, but I've personally heard good things about Big Bad Toy Store (I'm pretty sure they're located in the US which can help save on shipping).

I'd also recommend looking up reviews and videos on any figures you're interested in to get some in-depth info and the pros/cons on the quality/design.

You're definitely right Kazuki. For new releases, check out Big Bad Toystore first. Best prices overall. However, make sure to pre-order fast because they run out of stock fast... also rarely ever re-stock.

Other good options for new releases are:
Hobby Link Japan
Tsinc99.com

I forgot what other places I used to frequent that are still around today.

For retro stuff (70s to 90s), I really like:
forums
mandarake
yahoo japan
sometimes ebay

The hobby can get expensive super fast with new releases averaging 200-400 a pop per version and retro pieces in the 1000+.

I just cancelled my pre-order for that Mega Man anniversary statue because the design choices that ended up making the cut are awful. I have hope for the new X/Megaman statue that was just announced, here's hoping it doesn't turn out like crap :/

Some of the older SoCs can be had for a discount. Sellers might even cut you a deal if you buy several.

However the larger, more complex SoCs can actually shoot up in price... so pre-ordering on release is usually the safe bet to save in the long run.

BigBadToystore is usually pretty good about getting all the SoCs as they come out because that's one of the more mainstream robot toy lines.

The real question is, why doesn't Square create FF4 or FF6 Play Arts Kai figures? I've wanted action figures of those characters for my entire life.

Chrono Trigger too.

They're sitting on a gold mine.

My guess, at least for VI, is that they're waiting to make / release toys in the same timeframe as an FFVI remake / rerelease.

ThreeA are selling their Portal 2 Atlus and P-Body set and individual figures in a little less than an hour.

http://www.threeaonline.com/blog/?p=5170

I have heard very little publicity for them and not only do they look amazing but the engineering that went into these is insane.

I'm not a big enough Portal fan to splash the cash but just wanted to give people here a heads up so they can buy them direct instead of through Sideshow or Bigbadtoystore 6 months from now.

My most recent piece. I got this at my first ever and long overdue visit to Toy Tokyo.

Also, the Samus and Link Figmas are getting rereleased. Pre-order them shits if you didn't get them last fall.

So if I wanted a Alien xenomorph figure what would be the best one to look for? I'd like one based on the first movie.

If you're looking one based on the first movie, you might want to look into the series that Super7 will be releasing in the fall. A set of figures was created in 1979 but for some reason they never made it past the prototype phase. Super7 recently got the rights to produce the figures, so they'll finally be coming out over 30 years later. You can pre-order them starting during SDCC.

Oh wow, that is awesome. I really want all of those now. I think I remember reading about these once, how there was a series of oddly child-targeted Alien merchandise planned. I can only assume they thought they could capitalize on it like Lucas did with Star Wars figures and didn't really understand that Alien is nothing like Star Wars.

Yeah, I'd love to know why they never got produced. I've got to remember to ask the Super7 guys when I see them at NYCC. I wonder if it has anything to do with the R rating of the movie. Maybe once it got that rating they realized the couldn't really market the stuff to kids.
