When I was a kid, we had no money. So, that made game buying decisions easy. I got one or two for christmas, and that was about it. The one time I can remember fucking up was when we went to the store around christmas time. The moms would ask us which game the other one would want. I picked Burger Time or something for him, and he picked Tagin Dragon for me. So guess what, I got fucking burger time, and he got the great Tagin Dragon. We complained a little upon opening the games, and were able to switch. I'm not sure who really won...

I'd have to go back and look at my collection, but I don't recall ever picking up any stinkers on the NES. The only regret I have from the NES era was not buying Punch Out and by the time I had saved enough money for it, I couldn't find it in any stores. I was never really disappointed with anything I chose, but I do remember getting Carnival on the Intellivision and being pretty pissed with how slowly it moved.
