Well, I finally took the time to read this thread since I'm home.
While I was in Japan I popped a 100 Yen coin into this one machine, and instantly had a new favourite shooter. What's this? ProGear no Arashi. Seems it was only released on Japanese CPS2 boards, and who knows whether or not on a home system, but it's a side-scrolling shooter from Heaven. If you want a real non-stop challenge, play this game! The enemies literally shower you with uncountable amounts of bullets, and my God, just wait till you see the level 2 boss.... at one point, almost the entire screen was literally covered in bullets.. and I even managed to out-fly them (did use one bomb though). The game just has the maddest shooter action I've ever experienced.
Since probably very few of you have ever seen this, I'll explain how it works. You choose one out of three planes, and one out of three companions (who join you, or rather their firepower does, with enough power-ups) and you have the standard bombs which make you temporarily invincible. Simple system, but constructed with mastery.
There was too much noise from all the other machines, esp. Guiter Freaks 4th mix where someone kept getting 130 something hit combos, to hear the music very well, so I can't comment on it.
Fun factor: Through the roof and into space! This is a game more than worth hunting down if you ask me. Would have spent all my money on it but there was a group of us so we played mostly multi-player games.
The shooter I most grew up with was the Nintendo incarnation of 1943, followed closely by Life Force, and Commando if that counts.
I've played some Macross game on the SFC, I think Scrambled Valkyrie Mission (from 1992) and it's amazing!
I love mostly all the Neo shooters, and today I'm going to go pick up ASO 2. One thing about that game, apart from it rocking, is mission 3. Whenever I get there, it makes me so woozy, the screen shifting from left to right, left to right, back and forth, one side to the other.... makes me dizzy and want to get off the ship! Aero Fighters 2 was always a huge one with me, nowadays in part due to consistently failing to beat my brother's 12/14 missions in 1 credit feat. Strikers 1945 + is that series's entry I have most played. I love it, a whole lot, but it gets boring sometimes playing it on level-8. Prehistoric Isle 2 I found to be good fun myself, why I'm not really sure. Just something different.
Raiden is something nobody can forget, or be without. Even these days I can go to this one arcade probably any day of the week and I see people all trying to beat the game on one credit, getting really far with huge scores, but never quite making it. The classics last!
Well, that's enough for now. Happy to see this thread is receiving continued attention.
Good night.
