OK, here are my thoughts on some of the shooter topics:
1) Gigawing 1 and 2. I don't really like either one, and my main complaint (to keep this short) is the reflect gimmick. Sure you may say it is innovative, but as a long time shooter fan, I don't like that you HAVE to use it on many parts. There is just no way to get through some parts without it. Also, they messed it up in GW2 by not being able to fractionally use it. Each time uses thefull gauge, making a dumb feature (IMO) even worse. Mars Matrix is better, but as for DC shmups, it's Gunbird 2 all the way. Oh and Gigawing 2 may have "better" fancy pants 3D graphics, but it also has "better" slowdown.

2) Neo does have some vert shooters, in Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings 2 and 3, Ghost Pilots, and Alpha Mission II

3) MVSHOLIC- I have that Macross Plus PCb, and it does in fact, rock. (I also have the 1992 Banpresto "Space Fortress Macross" pcb)

4) Turbo/PC engine is a GREAT shooter paltform. Saturn may have many shooters, but PCE has even more! Many of them really good!

Glad to see someone else shares the same eunthusiasm for the game! <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

I also have SFM, however I hardly ever play it.

There's still so many games to play... Pilot Kids from Psyiko .... Esprade... Strikers 1945+ etc.

That's too bad Digipunk, but I have a feeling you'll be beating the game here before long. Don't give up, it's worth the practice, in my opinion.

As for some more shooters to get brought up, anybody ever play Biohazard Battle on the Genesis? Is there some place I can check out for a story or something on this game? The copy I got came with a case but no book. You talk about some interesting effects in the graphics department, this game has a scene where a big black earthworm slinks through the air after you. Okay, I know, a big worm, big deal. But wait until you see the thing move. I don't know how they pulled off the effect, but it literally looks life-like, and the damn thing ain't even a boss! I'd recommend this sleeper hit to any shooter fan. It's fun as hell, and all the graphics have this "living" Aura Battler Dunbine look to them...

Yes. Pc Engine. I remember getting my hands on Parodius (worlds FIRST 8 Meg Hu Card) and claiming that it was superior to Gradius in every way (it still kinda is in some ways). I had a really fun few weeks with it. It even had parallax scrolling which is quite feat in PC Engine programing from what I hear. I know that Konami was was one of the few companies to do that successfully on the Engine. Drac X showed that power off great.

And then there are the Parodius gameson Saturn that I have yet to play. I really want to get my paws on Sexy Parodius because i hear it is quite possibly the Sexiest shooter ever; moreso than Chaoniki: Love Big Brother.

Im off to Shmup!

I grew up on Konami shooters and I still haven't seen nor played a Parodius game other than the one that was part of Konami's classic collection for the import Saturn. I'd like to get a hold on some Parodius games myself. Now that I think about, I need to locate a copy of Gyruss and Axelay too. Other than that, my Parodius experience has been restricted to listening to OST from the games.

Hey YeldellGW, have you ever played a helicopter shooter by Konami called AJAX? If not, you have GOT to try that game. The weapon systems, enemies, and gameplay variants kick some serious ass. I am not sure if it ever made a console release, but if you can get a set-up to play the PCB, do it. Some of the levels are standard shooter fare, with an overhead view, scrolling vertically, with waves of enemies coming at you, while others offer some twists not found in most shmups.

One of the variant levels places you in a fighter jet, diving straight down towards enemy ships you have to take out, and you have to dodge fighters, etc., that are rising to meet you. One of my favourite shooters of all time.

AJAX...the name sounds familiar, but I don't think I've played it. Sounds pretty sweet though. I think the only arcade shooters Konami made that I've played were Gradius and Lifeforce (Shooters in arcades back home were scarce). I remember also playing Gyruss in the arcade as well, but I didn't recall seeing Konami's name on the cabinet.

Speaking of Konami shooters, I just got Twinbee Deluxe Pack for Saturn, and it's great! Very quirky and cute graphics, but awesome powerups and playability.

Check it out if you can.

In keeping with the other Threads where people are posting their thoughts on various shooters, what do you all think of the ThunderForce Gold Pack 1? I just scored a new copy, and am waiting for it to arrive. <IMG SRC="smilies/drool2.gif" border="0">

I haven't played the gold pack versions, but I really liked TF2 and 3 on the Megadrive.

*goes off to load up TF3*

Does it contain only those two? I know it is a collection disc, but I do not even know for sure what is on it. I just ordered it as soon as I saw it, since there was a good chance of it disappearing if I waited.

As far as I know, Gold pack 1 contains MD Thunderforce 2 and 3 whereas Gold pack 2 contains Thunderforce AC (arcade port of TF3 - may be slightly different) and MD Thunderforce 4. I'm not aware of any extras, but I'm not 100% as I don't have them.

As far as extras go, the music CD I got with TFV special pack is really sweet <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
(74 minutes of remixed music from TF2,3 and 4)

You are correct about the contents of the two packs, I just found the information at SHMUPS. I cannot wait for it to show up! <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

AC is slightly different. Some of the levels are ported directly from TF3, but level 5 comes from TF2 (it's stage 9 in that game). There's also a level exclusive to AC as well.

In my opinion, the Genesis versions of TF2 and TF3 have better music than AC.

Shooters own.

I love Giga Wing 1, I don't understand why it gets bashed on so much... yes, you have to use the reflect a lot. But the key is finding out *WHEN* to use it, and reflecting maximum amounts of bullets to drive up the multiplier higher, and thus get a higher score. I have finished this on one credit... Giga Wing 2 on the other hand, I don't care for as much... and I can't believe people call it easy. <IMG SRC="smilies/eek2.gif" border="0">

Recently my eyes have been opened to just how awesome the Strikers 1945 series is. Yeah, they're short games but they're the perfect games to drop a token into when you want a quick fix of kickass shooter action. Strikers 1945 Plus on the Neo is pretty similar to part II, but I think I prefer II overall. I am playing Strikers 1945 III a lot lately, although the last boss is impossible to get by on one credit... oh well, I have a blast getting up to that point <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

And oh yes, I love Pulstar. Even finished the whole game on one life. Once. Haven't been able to repeat it since. <IMG SRC="smilies/tickled.gif" border="0">

We've gotta keep this thread alive !

Here's something new for you to chew on.

Best Shooter EVER!

That's easy!

Galpus followed by Galaga!

On namco museum 3 Galpus is like Galaga, only (if you can believe it) more awesome cuz YOU get the tracktor beam!

And there is no topping Galaga. Hard, and tons of fun!

OK guys, this is a really obscure one...

It's from the late 80's... GONDOMANIA

Anybody remember this odd little game?

You play a little barbarian on a jet bike/hovercraft and you throw little axes and swords at your enemies.

The cab had one of those rotating joysticks

so you could shoot in all directions.

What was the early ninties vert shooter where you were a lamborgini (or some type of sportscar turned jet craft? I remember seeing it in arcades around the time of magic sword and sfII. Any ideas?

Now Playing: Macross Scrambeled Valkrie for SFC--this game rocks!

Just picked up Cross Shooter.
For those of you who haven't heard of it it's the prototype for the series that would become Raiden, Raiden Fighters 2 etc.

Hopefully we can have it in mame soon. <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

Gondowmania..

Yep. Axes swords & a hoverbike. Not a bad game.

I'll guess Action Fighter (1986). Not only can your red car be a jet craft, but it starts out as a motorcycle. The motorcycle would wipe out if you tried bump other vehicles, but the car could do it. You get these powerups that turn your motorcycle into the car.

I remember this one. There were gold coins and weapons you could buy strewn about the landscape (run over them if you've collected enough coins).

The place I played this at eventually kitted Heavy Barrel into the cabinet.

Nice to see people who actually like GigaWing 2 for a change. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0"> People shouldn't be comparing it to a game like Radiant Silvergun and just dismiss it. It's really a pretty good game.

Speaking of GigaWing 2, what's everyones high-score look like? Right now my high-score in Arcade Mode is 205,359,204,312,852. I'm wondering how that stacks up against the rest of you. <IMG SRC="smilies/tongue.gif" border="0">

Oh yeah, my highest Score Attack score during a level came on level 2 where I scored 30,398,470,387,326,940 pts!!! <IMG SRC="smilies/eek.gif" border="0">
