Serious discussion - why the hell is the NumLock key placed IN the number pad?

I assume there is some specialized use for the keypad where someone would need to be able to switch between the numbers and the arrow keys/page up and down/home and end keys with one hand?

I think it’s now legacy function from the early days were there were not separate directional keys on keyboards.

Couldn't you just pop it off?
Most keyboards you can just remove the cap without breaking anything.
The idea is to make it easier to clean.
