Playstation (1) was the single most important console in gaming history

I'm not going to read this whole thread. The Playstation was a badass gaming system, but it was not the most important. The NES resurrected the American home video game market, the Genesis was the first to intentionally market to an older audience (unless you count the porn games on the VCS) and the Wii was the first to really successfully market to non-gamers.

Not sure about the single most important but definitely one of the most important in gaming history. Like a few have brought up, the NES console resurgence should be placed above. You might be able to argue the PS2 dominance and longevity rank above it as well since it was the console that not only cemented Sony as a video game power house but with them including DVD playback it took console gaming in a multi-media direction more than any console before it.

Simple. Saturn > N64.
Even nowadays you see people coming after Saturns, nobody cares about the PS1. And it's not only due to collectors. The Saturn had solid, quality titles. I used to hate it back in the day. But it was all Sega's fault. Had they gave us the same as the Japs had, the figures could be a bit different. The PS2 is a different story tho.
yeah nobody cares about Alundra, Klonoa, Tombi 1+2, Castlevania SotN, Castlevania Chronicles, R-Types, Raiden Project, Rapid Reload, Elemental Gearbolt, Valkyria Profiles, Clock Tower 1+2, Sonic Wings Special PAL, Suikoden 1+2, Deception 1-3, Parodius PAL, Point Blank 1-3, In The Hunt etc etc.

What was so important about it? Most of the games sucked, horrible load times, & i had to flip it over to play the damn thing. I would put the Saturn & PS2 over the psx but the cartridge base consoles before that were tops.

@ you and Atro: Do you realize that the Saturn shares 70% of the library with the PS1? And for each Saturn Exclusive there some equillant or more on PS1.

PS1 ruined gaming, so yeah it was pretty significant.

how?

I really miss those odd-ball PS1 titles. Late 90's, I was out on my own and had a ton of free time and little $$. I used to rent the hell out of PS1 games back then.

Now it seems much of the quirky game development has gone to mobile devices....and fuck mobile gaming.

the ps4 makes quite some improvements in that regard tough ;)

Can't say I was a big fan of the playstation. Got one again not too long ago to go back and try to play some of the stuff I missed out on. The things I liked all seemed so outdated and the ones I tried for the first time I couldn't really make myself sit and play. It just wasn't any fun to come back to, but really wasn't that much fun for me the first time around either.

Those crappy black discs that got scratched just by looking at them, man I hated those. The stupid memory cards that kept loosing your saves. Lasers going funky and the little spindle thing that holds the disc breaking. I've never had as much trouble out of a console until the 360 came along.

The ps1 was such a pain 5 out of the 5 I owned back then crapped out. I didn't even bother with a ps2 thinking it would just be more of the same garbage.

I think I played a half dozen or so games to completion on the system. I mostly rented games, but of the few that I owned the system was mostly used for playing fighting games.

I guess it was a good console, but I wouldn't personally rate it as one of the great ones.

Meh, the ps1 may not be everybody's cup ot tea but it did have a lot of good games on it.
I've still got a lot of them.
The early stuff released on it was pretty good.
Destruction derby, jumping flash, wipeout, rapid reload, raiden, doom, ridge racer, tekken, they were class games back then.

So you didnt bother with the console that was 100% BC with PS1 games? I have issues with my saturn right now where the laser is slowly dying and glitches errors, but unlike the PS1 it is a rare and expensive console to replace.

Thanks to Backwards compatibility there are over 300 million PlayStation devices out there who all can play PS1 games with its own strengths and weaknesses. Its one of the least consoles you will have issues with for the times to come.

The black surface is a protection layer and more reliable than other CDs, its also great because the scratches become more visible thats why you have this impression.

How can PS1 memory cards lose your saves? They dont need a battery unlike Neo Geo, Saturn or certain Nintendo cartridges.

I've had 3rd party ones over the years that have just erased themselves, but not 1st party.

Pretty much.

I have no idea how the memory cards work. I just got tired of my game saves vanishing or being corrupted, or the cards just not working anymore. I've oem ones and third party ones and had it happen. I've wondered about that myself some. I know one memory card for sure died due to it being my fault. I dropped it, like standing and onto the carpet and that was it, it never worked again.

I didn't bother with the ps2 because by the time it had came out I had already been through 5 ps1 units. I had already gotten rid of all my games by the time it came out so not much concern for backwards compatibility.

Its great that there are so many devices that someone can go back and play the games on though. However, I can't really think of more than a handful that I may actually want to play someday.

As for the discs, I would say it is a combination of the lasers getting funky and then the discs looking bad, either way. I just don't have any fond memories of the system.

I loved the ps1 i bought mine in 97 still works great! And I felt really brought a new life to the gameing industry.

I agree with the fact one tiny scratch the discs where done. But I never had a laser problem. My ps2 on the other hand, i burned through 5 of those before the slim came out.

Definitely one of the greatest pry fifth.

As for the Atari system causing the crash, you can pretty much blame software developers and the over saturation of the market.

BLAME THE VECTREX!

Edit one last thing: Lets not forget Ralph Baer and the Magnavox Odyssey.

I've never seen a Sony branded card lose saves or die.

My advice: stop using shit 3rd party memory cards.

The major problem with Atari was there wasn't a standards to what could be released. You can release as many games as you want, but when 70-80% of the games being released were unplayable pieces of shit and nobody had any way of telling. Just whatever you see on the box. Then you have a shit load of pissed off customers who refuse to buy video games.

In all honesty the adults were the ones buying the Atari and Pong at the beginning. It didn't become a kids system until the crash and Nintendo.

P.S. Hardly anybody even knew what a Magnavox Odyssey was back then let alone now. Ralph Baer is famous because of documentary's that happened over 30 years since he did anything worthwhile.

Sad but true but does not change the fact.

I did, twenty years ago. It's worked out great for me.

No but really, I don't know what the deal was. Could have been one of the systems fucking them even, but there was a time where I would find my game saves corrupt or gone.

Oh the good old days of having all your unlocked characters for your favorite fighting game and taking your memory card with you to go play at a friend's house. I think one of the best memories of stuff we ever did with the console was use that system link cable and play Descent and Destruction Derby.

This was my favorite answer to why the ps1 was great.

Vagrant story, valkeryie profile, legaia, legend of dragoon, lunar, parasite eve (the first one), granstream saga, and the final fantasy's!

Those and my favorite franchise had its start there...

NES was more important in my view, but the PS was an undeniably influential system.

YEah, I remember my buddy having one of those "multi page" madkats or whatever stupid brand cards, the ones where you had like 8 cards worth of storage but you had to press buttons on the card to cycle through sets of 15 blocks. Dude had all of his RPG saves spread across the thing and he lost everything after less than a year. It just went blank one day, lol.
