The Who

Limp Bizkit

Obviously the Who's version is the better one. I just don't understand why the Limp Bizkit version cut out the end of the song and replaced it with some dumbass chant.

The song wayne's linking to is called Behind Blue Eyes.

EDIT: OMIGOSH! Fourth Wall Break!

Take On Me

Original A-ha

*gasp* How can you prefer that over the original!? Even DDR kept it as it is!

Oh well....

How's this?

Girl from Ipanema

Jarabe de Palo

It's hard, but I prefer Jarabe de Palo. The lyrics are pretty much the same despite the different language.

We were having a little tiff about what makes a cover a cover and not a sample or whatever. Case in point:

It's a cover if it retains the overwhelming majority of the same lyrics and same general spirit of the original song.

It's a sample if someone records part or all of the song for playback during a different song. See Vanilla Ice, "Ice Ice Baby" versus Queen/David Bowie, "Under Pressure" and also MC Hammer, "U Can't Touch This" versus Rick James, "Superfreak."

It's an idiotic ripoff made by talentless hacks if the new song is just a recreation of a familiar hook and handful of words. For example, that recent hip-hop/R&B/what-the-fuck-ever Right Round song is not a cover, nor a sample. It's just garbage.

The Who - A Quick One, While He's Away

Green Day - A Quick One, While He's Away

I stumbled onto the Green Day remake the other day, and I thought it was halfway decent until I got towards the end. They're about the same length, so I figured the remake wouldn't alter the formula too much. (Mind you, I don't mind details being changed if it works out well. That's why songs are remade.) Instead, some of the segments were rushed so the "You Are Forgiven" part could drag on roughly forever. The vocals also sounded oddly lazy in places. Still, they have good taste, and there were some damn nice instrumentals.

Neat cover, but there is seriously no way in Hell anyone with a functioning brain could prefer it over the original.
They're both good. I like the original for the female vocals, but I honestly am more drawn to the cover's acoustic vibe and more mournful tone.
