Yeah, SNES was rape back in the day. $70-$80 for a game in the 90's... that was probably a paycheck for some.

I don't remember the most expensive game I bought then, but it had to be a SNES game.

One of the Phantasy Star genesis carts had a $100 price tag. Fortunately that was a time when it was possible to rent it instead of making an outright purchase.

The game that you needed a new controller for were the real gapers. Like sf2 champion on the megadrive/genesis - the game was about £60 plus you then pretty much needed two £20 six button pads to play with, so a tidy £100 game in the end. I remember thinking back then that it was creeping up to Neo Geo prices all in.

When I think about it, I picked up the Super Famicom release of Street Fighter 2 before the US release in the United States. It was $150 and that included the work for them to melt the plastic so that it would fit into the US system. One of the dumbest things I ever did when I was a kid.
Didn't they have converters that let you play a Japanese game on a US SNES?

Streetfighter II for the Snes cost me 220 Guilders, which was about $ 160,00 back in the day.
I had a shop hand build me an Arcade stick with Happ hardware just to play it .

I think the most I paid for a game, was for the Infamous 2 Hero Edition - 195€

EDIT - Note to self read full titles -_-

In the 90's the most I paid for a game was probably Samurai Shodown for the Mega drive (Genesis) around 60-70€

I bought that on release. It was Phantasy Star IV. At the time it was the biggest Genesis cart in terms of Meg count.

Super Street Fighter II for the Genesis $69.99 at launch in the states. Over $70 with tax which was ridiculously expensive for a Genesis cart.

Yes they did, but this game store I went to in San Jose called Game Hunter offered their service of melting 2 lines on the back of the cart for a perfect fit. At that time when I was a kid I just wanted to play it. We were pretty popular for a while because we were able to play the game months before the US release. When we came home with the game, I told my dad we paid $80. The next day he went to the store and asked how much the game was? When he came home we were in big trouble...some good and bad memories :)

Hmmm... in 1990 - 2000? It'd have to be Magic. I think I shoveled over $500 into those fucking cards back then.

Now that I think about it, I did get my parents to buy me Street Fighter 2 Turbo snes the Christmas is came out, knowing full well that the only shop in town that had it wanted $80 for it, so it ties X men vs SF.

That the UK was expensive for games was a well known fact (AFAIR most SNES releases going for 40-45 GBP, SF2 for 65 GBP) but I am quite surprised how expensive things were in Germany. This is especially so, since I rememeber reading a feature in Super Play magazine back in the days which mentioned that Germany is a good place to get PAL games since the prices are a lot lower than in the UK - apparantly this wasn't universally the case.

This topic is for purchases you made PRIOR to 2000...

That's why I didn't include my neo purchases, until 2004 all I could do was dream about owning one...

having to dig through the memory banks a bit but for that time period i'd say the most expensive games i was buying would have been n64 games... they were stupid expensive in Australia... i remember seeing RRP's of about $110-120 on quite a lot of them :\

so yeah can't say exactly what titles cost what... but there you go... $110-120AUD...

Ya, come to think of it. I bought Harvest Moon 64 brand new from Electronics boutique for $85 I think in 99. Might have been $80. Was definitely 8x.
