I think it is perfectly reasonable for people posting on a site dedicated to the NEO GEO to have a certain bias in favor of their chosen platform. Being a fan of NEO GEO is not just about liking the games as some of you think. It is also about liking the hardware that runs those games.

If you think being a fan of a system is stupid, maybe you are the one who needs to be more open minded.

Wow, you just managed to completely miss my point and prove it at the same time. I wasn't aware that was possible. ;P

Okay, I'll play nice and try to be less cryptic. If finding system advocacy to be childish and stupid is being prejudicial, then paint a swastika on my Hebrew tush right now. Fanboys suck.

I feel I made myself fairly clear in the first place, but I'll rephrase. 2D fans are a dying breed. Like it or not, 3D is what everyone's moving toward (which is a shame). The one thing that everyone here has in common is a love of 2D games... if you didn't love 2D, you obviously wouldn't bother with the Neo. Anyone who relishes the artistry of these older games and can appreciate them on a level beyond their lackluster (by modern standards) visuals should be welcomed here.

At least in theory... I'm no fonder of the emu-kiddiez than anyone else. I emulate, sure, but I also own the systems I play with, and I don't try to pretend that it's not illegal, or worse, that I'm somehow "entitled" to these games. I hate that attitude so very much. But the point is, devotion to one particular piece of hardware is just plain silly. No one here (well, aside from Shawn) has a personal stake in the success or failure of any given form of the Neo. When you get right down to it, we all play the Neo's games... and whatever form the game takes, as long as it's official and SNK/Playmore sees money for that copy, then more power to them.

I applaud anyone who's ever bought an SNK/Neo*Geo game, regardless of its platform (please, don't go into semantics... you know what I mean). Sure, ports aren't 100% identical to the original... but nowadays, they're damn close. And if someone can't afford to pony up for the original Neo cart, then that's no one else's place to criticize. Dion used to prattle on constantly about "true Neo fandom" relying on financial outlay. Bullshit. I've been a fan of the Neo since I first discovered it in 1990. I've owned... err... six Neo systems (not including the NGPC) over the years. Dion owns more Neo games and merchandise than I ever will... and he considers me less "devoted" for that, regardless of the circumstances behind the imbalance. Maybe I don't want to collect every Neo game (which I don't).

I don't know if it's the anonymity of the internet or what, but people constantly say things to each other online that they'd never have the guts to say in person. Even if you have to disagree on something, these things could be said with a much greater degree of tact than most people seem capable of. So you have an MVS? Great stuff, isn't it? I've got an AES, and I love the two games that I presently own. Joe Blow here has a DC/Saturn/PSX and a bunch of SNK games for them. So-and-so has a NeoCD which he adores and plays constantly. Whatsisname loves the portable stuff and never goes anywhere without the NGPC.

Owning an MVS, saving money by buying ports, buying the home carts, etc. It's all the same to me. One of these is no better than the others, in terms of what defines a fan. In the end, it's not about the system. Neo*Geo is just a name. It could be called "Spunkenfurter Cheesegoat" for all I care, and I'd still own one if it had the games I want. And I'd still back up my words with my wallet.

-Deuce, who thinks naming a system "Spunkenfurter Cheesegoat" is a phenomenally cool idea.

Oh and as I make my departure from this thread, anyone who goes so low to say AES is not the same as MVS, get a fucking life will you.

What the fuck are you talking about?
If you keep saying that buying ports is gay then you are fuckin retard.

Deuce, I can see you had a lot on your mind. I think you are the one who is missing the point, though. People are not stupid for being fans of the NEO GEO hardware just because that sort of thing is not your cup of tea. Imagine saying that people are stupid for wanting to buy a Corvette or a Harley, because everyone knows that Toyota and Honda make the best cars and motorcycles are not safe. These people are not stupid; they are enthusiasts or "fans". People who have been supporting the NEO GEO hardware for the past 12 years are a very similar bunch.

And this site was created for those people.

Now you seem to have this Utopian fantasy about all 2D gamers uniting under the banner of NEO-GEO.COM but that is not happening because that is not what this site is for.

MVS, AES, Ports.

Where are dA rOmZZZZ at?!?

A port of KoF2K1 for the DC was almost a sure thing, good to see them taking the time to give other people a chance to play the game. Maybe they will toss in some extra crap, something besides a lame puzzle game.

Nice post, man, but...

...fanboys helped to keep systems like the Neo alive. If there wouldn't have been all those fans who "defended" their Neo against flocks of 3D-lovin' ppl, it would have been dead by 1996.

IMO, a dose of fanboyism from time to time isn't a bad thing.

But bashing ports players for owning inferior versions of a game is as stupid as bashing AES/MVS owners for buying the original stuff.

It's a fact that the AES/MVS version is the original, and that ports neither are perfect, nor the real thing, which doesn't say much about their quality. Fatal Fury on Genesis for ex. was very far from being perfect, but it was a fun game nonetheless which I played for countless hours.

If ppl would simply play and enjoy the games they have instead of comparing game A to port B, enraged discussions like this wouldn't be necessary.

Thou art wise beyond thy years my son... :)

Seriously though, good post, although I disagree with the whole "fanboy" part to a degree. I'm a id Fanboy, a nVidia fanboy, and a Squaresoft fanboy, possibly a Sony one as well (I'm still debating :-P). I like companies who have a good track record and can consistantly produce products that I like. I think it's a good thing, brand loyalty is something that is earned and to be respected once it is attained.

That's just my opinion though, Fran's will invariably differ... :p :D

Peace
