Man, that has to be the most odd implementation of BG music in the history of video games. I thought I kept hearing the same songs over and over and over again. Now I know why.

How strange! I was really looking forward to hearing teh music in this too.

I mean, all the characters are speaking Japanese anyway, so why remove the japanese music?

Hmm. . . I have held off getting a system mod since I have the uni-bios in my MVS cab already.

What a pain. :p

For those who have unmodded US systems, investing in a debug chip or Japanese system would be a very good idea!!! Well, the debug is very useful at least anyhow. I think it's pretty dumb that there are no songs on a US bios. Did they think the people buying the game here would care that there were Japanese songs? Without them it makes the game look bad.

If you're going to bump a dead thread, you'd better have a pretty good reason...

And I do: this weekend, while looking around in the local used video game store I found a copy of:

Power Instinct 2 (豪血一族2) for the PSX

Groove on Fight (豪血一族3) for the Saturn.

w00t.

I'm especially happy about picking up the 'Groove on Fight', as this is the first time I've ever seen a copy.

Played PI2 yesterday. It really reminds me of a cross between World Heroes and Fatal Fury. The sprites have about the same frames of animation and general feel as FF, but the gameplay has the 'floatiness' feeling common to the WH series.

The character roster is pretty similar to Matrimelee. Clara, Pochi, Kanji, Oume, Tane, Annie, Keith, Reiji, Saizo, White Buffalo, and Chinnen are all here.

There are four other characters that didn't make it to Matrimelee. Some characters (Clara, Kanji) also have alternate sprites with different specials, but I haven't figured out how to unlock them yet.

A lot of the sound effects in Matrimelee, like the honking horn at the title screen etc. are also present here. So is Kuroko, and bands and singers in the background of some stages. One stage even looks remarkably similar to the arena stages in Matrimelee. Also, the loser of a match also has his portrait painted over (like in Matrimelee).

Haven't played 'Groove on Fight' yet, as my Saturn is still in storage. As soon as I do though, I'll post a review.

Tsukaesugi, the "alternate sprites" you speak of in Power Instinct 2 are NOT extra characters, but rather, transformations that some of the characters go through when you do certain moves or throws. This is something that has been in Power Instinct from the beginning, yet is strangely missing in Matrimelee. I really would have liked to have seen the transformations in the Neo-Geo version; even the SNES and Genesis ports of Power Instinct had Oume and Otane changing. :p

In Power Instinct 2, you have Kurara("Clara") changing into the more mature version of herself on roller blades, preschooler Kintaro changes into Pochy("Poochy;" and if you know about the Japanese Kintaro fairy tale, Poochy's bear-summon super makes more sense!), both Oume and Otane change into (much) younger versions of themselves(you can see this in one of their win poses in Matrimelee), etc.

The two things I don't get about Matrimelee are the English name changes(Thin-Nen becomes "Chinnen," etc.) and the lack of one character: Angela Belti. Matrimelee has all of the original PI cast except for her.

BTW, Groove On Fight has none of the PI cast other than Oume and Otane, who are tied back to back and fight as one character! :)

annoyed

I must say that i am truly gutted that i cannot hear the 'proper' music - even though i won't be able to understand the lyrics as such.

I have briefly heard some of the proper songs from various clips etc and needless to say i have a debug bios on order and will purchase a JP machine if i cock that up!

I must play this game with all the bells and whistles so to speak.

Notwithstanding my annoyance at this i am glad i have this game, dunno about the rest of you, but i held off of KOF 02 and ROTD, but as soon as i saw some screens of this game i was 100% for it.

What sealed the deal was the footage of Clara turning her opponent into a duck -forget yer serious desperation moves why dont ya! make_fac

After converting a spare DC arcade stick i can now pull off all the moves a bit more comfortably, mind you i still cant do those Hold back then towards and 'A' button moves - they dont work like normal 'charge' moves ??

Just figured that out this morning when I got Clara to do her super and she transformed into Super Clara...

Thanks for the info though!

A little more on the PSX version of this game:

-the loadtimes and slowdown are pretty noticeable. Right before doing a super, the screen freezes! Now I know how NGCD owners feel.

-Kintaro is not wearing anything under his little jumper: knock him in the air and you can very clearly see his err... his 'equipment'. I'm guessing that this is unique to the Japanese version (was there a N.American version?)

-there are two other characters that didn't make it to Matrimelee: Sahado Asuranryoto (think Arabian Nights), and Oshima Gouketsuji (Oume and Tane's older sister)

-the change from 'Thin Nen' to 'Chinnen' might be because of different transliterations of the original Japanese: some people write 'tu' instead of 'tsu' and 'syo' instead of 'sho', so 'thi' might be a different spelling of 'chi'.
