I swear... I have all the best snes rpg's that include...
Secret of mana,
Crono trigger,
Final Fantasy 2
(got anthalogy for crapstation, instead of the snes Final Fantasy 3)
secret of evermore (decent)
Breath of fire

Now if you look at the quality of those 2-d gems, and compare it two the newer playstation fantasies it leaves much to be desired.
So I personally had less fun with the PS ones (especially 8, to futuristic to be classified of having that older fantasy approach to it.
I did however enjoy FF9 and Chrono Cross, which these two titles I can easily call some of the stations finest, seeing as sony having no place in gaming all together should just take a hike (Squaresoft is there cruch). I got my gameinformer mag (dont ask) AND THOSE GAMECUBE SHOTS, ARE AMAZING!
I mean if you look at the station 2's graphical apopearance on ALL there games they have jaggies, do to the anti aliasing problem.
Gamecube will be the dominator of the the market, XBOX, is the next piece of tech junk to hit the market, next to ps2.
I just cant wait to see nintendo regain its crown. Heck I am so sick of games that have no appeal, and bad gameplay to match. Truly a downer...
Lets just hope FF10 is decent... I mean it is looking ok at best, but its still not a complete project yet, at least I hope it isnt...

I am a big fan of cartridges. However I must agree that there are a number of very good RPG titles that are out on the more recent systems. The for mentioned titles as well as games like Grandia II and Skies of Arcadia rank among the best IMO. However I still enjoy older RPGs a lot as well.

I just started playing FF6 (US FF3) for my PSX. I played the game four times when I had it on the SNES. Playing it again reminds me of how elegant these games were in their simplicity. Why is it that games like Dragon Warrior and old FF are able to communicate their story without having to be overly elaborate the way modern games are? As a writer I prefer for the story be more fleshed out if possible, but the old RPGs of the Nintendo consoles seemed to have that perfect balance of story, action and, most importantly, CHARM!

Today's RPGs lack the same innocent qualities that made the older games so much fun to play. I still like newer some newer RPGs; Skies Of Arcadia is as good as any FF game any day, and unlike most I dug FF 8 because I thought Squall was a great character. Xenogears, while way too long to play for such an inadequate payoff, was loads of fun too. But I don't seem to remember them as fondly as I do the old ones. I've never given thought to going back and playing FF 7 or 8, but this is my fifth go at 6. That really says something about the staying power of the old RPGs.

Most of the new RPG's suck, FF8 made me want to vomit. Dragon Quest 1-6, Secret of Mana 1,2 & 3,FF6&FF7(the last great FF) are all classics.

I think Final Fantasy X is going to be better than all the other one's. Lets hope Square can look at the mistakes they did with Final Fantasy 8 and make an improvement.

Hmmmm...
Some of the trends in RPG's today need to go the way of the dodo. Random battles is one of them. I hate them so much I could scream. Some should also lay off of all the cutscenes. Cutscenes should be used to enhance the game's story, not to make your four CD quota. As for FF8, damn I hated that one. It wasn't so much the story or the characters, I mainly hated the way you got new weapons. I mean, I don't use strategy guides at all, so I kept wondering how in the hell I was going to find the 24k gold cock-bolt of the WANG36XR robot in order to upgrade my weapon. The consequence is that my weapons were really weak and I had to rely too much on summonings and magic.
I got to about disc 2 and sold it. One thing that people don't like, but I do, is that in the older games, you had to "level-up." Some people say that all you have to do is keep levelling up and then you can crush any monster, but I disagree. I remember while playing Dragon Warrior, I got to the green dragon in the cave and he kicked my ass. So I ventured out and levelled up some and came back, another ass kickin'. After a while I finally got high enough so I could whoop him down and I was so happy. The thing about levelling up is that it gives you a sense of progress. In the newer RPG's, especially FF, the enemies HP are based on your stats, so you can come back 10 hours later and face an enemy you met at the beginning of the game and that enemy still will take some time to kill. Whereas in the older games, you could come back and "one-swipe" that joker. I really miss that.
